The United States World Cup story continues as they score a wonderful late goal, and beat Algeria to reach the round of 16 as group winners with much fancied England in second place.

Despite, controlling much of the game, the Yanks struggled to put the ball in the back of the net, again having a perfectly good goal disallowed.

However, despite going agonizingly close in the first half as Altidore's shot from close range went over the cross bar, the American boys managed to salvage the victory when the game seemed to be slipping through their fingers with a goal in the 91st minute of play.

Tim Howard

The colossus of the American goal, Howard was the catalyst for the late goal. His quick thinking release allowed his teammates a break with numbers and the rest is history.

7/10

Jonathan Bornstein

A solid performance from Bornstein who was starting his first World Cup game. Was subbed late in the game as Bradley tried to turn the screw on Algeria as the game was heading for a draw.

6/10

Jay DeMerit

The experienced center back was massive at the back for his team. The Algerian strikers struggled to get to grips with the game as Demerit never let them settle.

7/10

Steve Cherundolo

Cherundolo was always looking to break from the back for the US, and was as dependable in his defensive role as as well.

7/10

Carlos Bocanegra

Bocanegra lead by example, as the captain of the team he controlled the back four and marshaled the team well from the back. A true captains performance, when the team needed heroes, up stepped Bocanegra.

8/10

Landon Donovan

Cometh the hour, cometh the man. Despite having a relatively quiet game by his high standards. He made the pass to Altidore to cross for the goal, and he still had the awareness to be up with the play to tuck away a bundled stop by the keeper.

7/10

Michael Bradley

Often maligned for been the managers son, but today his combative and intense play in the middle of the park allowed the US to control the game for huge periods.

8/10

Clint Dempsey

Unlucky not to score with yet another bad call by an official. Dempsey was on fine form but just couldn't do it in front of goal this time.

7/10

Maurice Edu

Edu had a poor game, not really making much of an impact on the play but still managed to be on the winning side.

5/10

Herculez Gomez

Like Edu, the usually composed Gomez had a poor game, with Bradley replacing him at the half.

5/10

Jozy Altidore

Always a thorn in the side of the Algerian defenders, the big striker missed a gilt edged chance to give the US the lead in the first half, but set up the goal in stoppage time.

8/10

The Subs

DaMarcus Beasley, Benny Feilhaber, and Edson Buddle all did a great back up job for the Yanks, but with Beasley having little time to show his ability. Feilhaber was full of running and energy, helping out in the middle well. Buddle had lots of energy but little else.

Beasley 6/10
Feilhaber 7/10
Buddle 5/10

Man of the Match: Michael Bradley

The young midfielder was the heart beat of the US side, never letting the Algerians settle on the ball and feeding the stars of the US team the ball to do their job.
