As social media has become an increasingly important part of the professional sports landscape, so too has the way in which fans interact with their favorite players.
In the past, fans were relegated to catching soundbites of their favorite players on the nightly news, or through an article filed by the team's beat reporter.
Technology has changed (for better or for worse) and the distance between the news makers and the news consumers has shrunk drastically.
Twitter has been at the forefront of his transformation.
So, which NFL player has the most interesting Twitter account? Read on to find out.
No. 10 Bengals DT Tank Johnson
Twitter handle: @TankJohnson99
Best tweet: Storm just blew my neighbor patio furniture 15 floors up and off they balcony #wtf is up wit deez storms #datbullshit #imscurred #sike #iam
Why he's a must-follow: You watched Hard Knocks the last two years, right?
No. 9 Titans RB Chris Johnson
Twitter handle: @ChrisJohnson28
Best tweet: "Its like how u expect ur players to give they all and put their bodies on the line when you not willing to give them what they deserve"
Why he's a must-follow: The Chris Johnson holdout saga has the potential to be the most intriguing storyline during the preseason. If something breaks, you'll hear it first on C.J.'s Twitter account.
No. 8 Packers QB, Aaron Rodgers
Twitter handle: @AaronRodgers12
Best tweet: Looking forward to getting my PAC-10 championship ring from the '04 season. Thanks @claymatthews52
Why he's a must-follow: Start following Aaron Rodgers and you'll get the sense that he's one of those guys with the uber-dry humor who is always needling his friends. Though his one-liners aren't quite as asinine as Jared Allen's, he's still managed to come up with a few good zingers.
No. 7 Saints S Darren Sharper
Twitter handle: @Sharper42
Best tweet: "Imma bust you right under your chinstrap from the first play on. I don't care about the fine. F the money Imma do it for the red, white&blue"
Why he's a must-follow: The Darren Sharper-Visanthe Shiancoe twitter beef has been one of the highlights of the 2010 NFL offseason. Though they've both backed off their visceral tweets, there is no doubt that the first game of the NFL season will be a doozy.
No. 6 Vikings TE Visanthe Shiancoe
Twitter handle: @VShiancoe
Best tweet: "You are the FURTHEST thing from a physical safety.. even you know that your sofT with a capital "T!" You remind me of a growling chihuahua..."
Why he's a must-follow: The other half of the war of words with Darren Sharper. There's nothing better than seeing a 250-pounder talking smack over the Internet!
No. 5 Lions LB Zack Follett
Twitter handle: @Zakarianfollett
Best tweet: "I WOULD SLAP NATE ROBINSON IF I WAS HIS MOTHER"
Why he's a must-follow: After being drafted in the seventh round of the 2009 NFL Draft, Zack Follett put the NFL on notice when he said that every team who passed on him in the draft would, "pay for it."
After putting the hit of the year on St. Louis Rams kick returner Danny Amendola, we don't doubt him.
An aside: if you see a man in a Lions helmet shopping for tampons, please contact Martin Mayhew or Jim Schwartz immediately.
No. 4 Vikings DE Jared Allen
Twitter handle: @JaredAllen69
Best tweet: "The mullet was trimmed for the wedding but the Moolay is more than just some hair, its a lifestyle! You gotta keep a positive Mullitude..."
Why he's a must-follow: Sadly, Mr. Allen chopped off his famously hideous locks. But it's clear the power of his humor wasn't derived just from his mullet. Allen's twitter account is full of solid one-liners and non sequiturs, just like his interview below.
No. 3 49ers TE Vernon Davis
Twitter handle: @VernonDavis85
Best tweet: "I was watching CNN today and a guy walked up to someones house and stole their door mat"
Why he's a must-follow: As entertaining a player as there is in the NFL, V.D.'s playful Twitter battle with Darnell Dockett has led to some outstanding one-liners. Davis is also a frequent user of Twitpic, which I always enjoy.
No. 2 Bengals WR Chad Ochocinco
Twitter handle: @OGOchoCinco
Best tweet: "Is Ron Artest promoting his album in the interview? And y'all got the nerve to call me crazy, #wow" (Among many others.)
Why he's a must-follow: Want the chance to see inside the mind of one of pro sport's most outspoken athletes? Follow Ochocinco on Twitter. Don't want to uninstall TweetDeck because of nonstop "new tweet" sound? Don't follow Ochocinco.
No. 1 Cardinals NT Darnell Dockett
Twitter handle: @ddockett
Best tweet: "Did I just hear this correctly "Albert Haynesworth" will not be Mandatory minicamp? And he wants a trade, After signing 100millon dollar contract?"
Why he's a must-follow: Plain and simple, Dockett doesn't censor himself. Whether it's commentary on other players or starting a Twitter battle with a division rival, Darnell Dockett's twitter account never ceases to mesmerize.
