This week, the New York State Senate approved a bill that puts fans a step closer towards getting MMA events held in the Big Apple.
The bill passed after receiving a 32-26 vote, which now means that the sport can undergo the same state regulation that boxing currently has. The bill now gets passed along to the State Assembly for another crucial vote.
As a native New Yorker, I would like to make some points that can be leveraged in favor of passing that bill to make MMA legal in New York.
MMA generates millions of dollars for the cities that host it's events. Governor David Patterson believes that the sport of MMA could generate more than $2.1 million for NY over the course of the next two years.
I don't know about you, but with the current state of New York's economy, I can't see how any city wouldn't welcome that kind of additional money.
MSG. The place where legends play. I couldn't think of a better way to get MMA kicked off in New York City than to hold it in the palace of all sports.
Can you imagine the surge in attendance that your local MMA schools would get? As a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu student myself, this concept excites me a lot. Think of all the new training partners that you could have who would allow your skill level to get even better.
In addition, New York being the trendy place that it is, could actually start high school programs in MMA (like the one in Winchester, Mass) that would breed the best and brightest MMA stars.
Don't get me wrong, Las Vegas will always be the mecca for MMA, but wouldn't it be nice as an East Coast resident to not have to travel 3,000 miles to see your favorite UFC Fighters?
This is the picture of an MMA-hater. He is the biggest opponent against the sport getting sanctioned in New York. Apparently, he was quoted during this week's voting stating, “I can’t believe that we’ve wasted an hour of valuable time this afternoon.”
It seems as though it's now just a matter of time until MMA finally gets legalized in NY, and when that day comes it will be a celebration for many except this guy. Ah well, you can't please everybody =)
