What I Would Do if GM of the Pittsburgh Pirates

Eric Altgilbers thinks the Pirates are so bad that many of their minor-leaguers would serve as improvements.

MLB, Pittsburgh Pirates, MLB Trade Rumors, Editorial

Have you ever sat back and thought "I could run the team better than these @$$#*%&$!?" I know I could!

Following up on my fire sale report, I know the time is now for the ownership to strike while the iron is hot and start to make the productive trades. The fanbase in Pittsburgh is disappearing, and soon there will not be anyone attending games. Heck, I am jumping for joy about the Steelers' upcoming season. I like to say that the new ownership will turn things around, but until they start wheeling and dealing, the team will stay the same.

Currently the roster is as follows:

C: Ryan Doumit; 1B: Adam LaRoche; 2B: Freddy Sanchez; SS: Jack Wilson; 3B: Jose Bautista; RF: Xavier Nady; CF: Nate McLouth; LF: Jason Bay

If  trades were to occur, this is what the roster/lineup could be:

C: Miguel Perez (AA); 1B: Adam Boeve (AAA); SS: Brian Bixler (AAA); 2B: Jose Bautista; RF: Andrew McCutchen (AAA); CF: Nate Mclouth; LF: Nyjer Morgan (AAA)

Looking at the revised roster/lineup, the team would be better off with the new lineup and set for the future to make a run at the playoffs. I have looked at those players and believe that the new lineup would improve the team's record, and those players traded will fetch great pitching to improve the horrible current losing seasons.

  1. A bit trade-happy, no? That roster has a lot of holes (not even including the fact that there is either no 3B or no 2B, depending on where you meant to put batista). At some point you begin to build on what you have already put together.

For example, there is no reason to trade Ryan Doumit, who is 27, in his first full year as a catcher, and a terrific offensive player. He has not even been discussed as a trade possibility.

The Pirates are six games under .500 right now. That is by no means a reason to get excited, but it also means they have a couple good pieces who whould stick around. Plus, trading guys like LaRoche and Sanchez when their value is so low is just silly.

The Pirates obviously can't afford to rest on their laurels. But they need to be much more pragmatic than you are advocating. I mean, look at your revised lineup---Aside from McLouth, none of those guys are legitimate prospects except McCutchen. You didn't even include Walker or Pearce.

    1. Not even one season declares Ryan D. a catcher to build around. How soon everyone forgets about everyone wanting to build around Ronny P.. They should have traded him right after he had that great season. Also I did forget 3B: Neil Walker, that's who I wanted to put into the roster/lineup, thanks for the catch. I am alot trade happy, you tend to get that way after 11 years of bad baseball.

As for none of these guys being legitimate prospects, you are right, but the current roster is not doing it so I am ready for those guys in the minors who are hitting down there to see what they can do up in the show. Thanks for reading!!!
