Cavs and Byron Scott – Round 2

Paul RaymondCorrespondent IJune 16, 2010

According to Brian Windhorst of the Cleveland Plain Dealer the Cleveland Cavaliers have decided to give Byron Scott a second interview for their head coaching job. It’s not really a surprise to me. What probably happened is they didn’t take the first interview too seriously because they were so focused on Tom Izzo, now that he declined they need a chance to reevaluate Scott.

Windhorst says this interview won’t take place till after the NBA Finals, as Scott is an analyst for ESPN. I’m quite sure this interview will take place RIGHT after those Finals as this could be the perfect coach for one LeBron James. James wants a coach with NBA experience, something Scott has. He wants a coach whose succeeded, something Scott has. And best of all? Scott likes the thought of coaching James. Sounds like a win-win to me?

There’s another reason I think the interview will take place quickly. Scott would also really like a chance to coach Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers, if Phil Jackson’s contract isn’t renewed. Sounds like a guy who only wants a chance to catch winners doesn’t it? Can’t blame him like Snoop Dogg said in a recent song “Al Davis said it best just win, baby win” and that’s exactly what Scott wants.

Even if the interview does happen quickly which I think it should, the Cavaliers don’t want to make a quick offer to anyone. They want to take a few weeks and interview numerous candidates according to the Windhorst article.

I’m thinking they want to see what LeBron does first. If he leaves go and get a cheaper coach with less experience, save some money. If James wants to stay then get him a profile coach that can keep the team in contention.

It’s kind of a cynical thought but remember the Cavs front office is a total mess right now. But even more importantly you have to remember, it is Cleveland sports.
