Mats Sundin Old News, Dion Phaneuf New News

During the 2009-2010 season, no player on the Toronto Maple Leafs' roster wore a “C” on their Jersey.


The last player who wore the “C” was Mats Sundin. He was captain for 11 seasons.


Sundin was acquired by the leafs from the Quebec Nordiques on June 28th1994. The trade also included Garth Butcher, Todd Warriner and a first round pick of the 1994 draft. Wendel Clark, Sylvain Lefebvre and a first round pick of the 1994 NHL draft were sent to Quebec in exchange.


Monday June 14ththe Maple Leafs announced that Dion Phaneuf will be the next Leafs captain. Phaneuf was acquired from the Calgary Flames, which also brought Frederik Sjostrom and Keith Aulie to Toronto on January 31st2010, in exchange for Matt Stajan, Ian White, Niklas Hagman and Jamal “Jamers” Mayers. Dion Phaneuf was drafted 9th Overall in 2003 by the Calgary Flames.


Leaf fans just hope that Phaneuf will make as many memorable moments as Sundin did.
