IconAs of right now, Reggie Bush is well on his way to being the biggest over hyped flop ever in professional football.

I use the words "as of right now" because running backs normally come into their own in the second or third season.

But right now… Reggie Bush is a colossal bust.

After watching Reggie Bush yesterday with his 9 attempts for 32 yards, I came to realize how much of a disappointment he is.

Now some might say that he was hurt yesterday, and couldn’t perform up to his ability. In response to that, he played better yesterday than he had the previous two games when he was “healthy”.

The comparisons to Gale Sayers and Marshall Faulk were overwhelming; I honestly thought the media was going to induct Reggie into the Hall of Fame before he got drafted.

Even though the Saints won yesterday, wouldn’t things be a lot easier if someone actually played up their potential?

Let me say this, when Reggie Bush entered the NFL, he was expected to be a future 1000 yard rusher, and a possible 1000 yard receiver. What seemed possible before he was drafted is now almost laughable. Reggie is having a hard time getting 100 yards total offense and has had one 100 yard rushing game since being drafted and none this season.  His longest run for his career is 22 yards.

A lot of that has to do with Reggie refusal, and yes I said refusal to follow his block and use his eyes instead of hightailing it to the sidelines. It’s almost as if he is running scared. NFL defenses are built on speed, going horizontal then cutting up sidelines will not work anymore.

Many would think that without Deuce this year, that Reggie’s numbers would have gotten better…They haven’t…With Deuce having over 1000 yards and getting most of the carries, we all thought that it maybe Reggie’s year to shine. At this rate Reggie will have a hard time getting 700 yards rushing, and that’s pushing it.

A lot of people have argued that Reggie is not that type of running back who can give you 20 carries, that he is more of a third down running back. I have argued back saying that if I’m the Saints I’ve guaranteed a man 26 million dollars to be nothing more than a glorified Kevin Faulk?  And that’s no offense to Kevin Faulk, who is a great third down back, but I don’t believe that a third down back is what Reggie was drafted to be.

The Saints have only profited from Reggie economically. He sells jerseys, he does endorsements, and he has brought in fans old and new to New Orleans. People come from all around to watch him do nothing.

Reggie Bush is not even the best, second best, or even third best running back in his 2006 draft. Can we seriously put Reggie in front of a Laurence Maroney, Joseph Addai, or Maurice Jones-Drew?  I don’t think so.

But then again maybe I’m being a little harsh on Reggie, after all it’s only his second year. But when it comes to running backs, it’s the second and third year where the quote “what you see is what you get” begins to surface.

  1. I think you are an idot it does not take 2 or 3 years to see that

  2. thats not funny Mario Williams U play for the Texans LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL

  3. Dyson did'nt Reggie take your girl to the Prom Stop the Hating Man getting over it, I nailed her 2.

  4. Yeah because you have to suck pretty hard to get 1,000 yds from scrimmage in both of your first 2 seasons. He has around 930 right now. Watch more football you fucking prick.

  5. You have got to be kidding me, dude! How long have you been watching football and following NFL drafts? Expect to be called out if you think Reggie could be the biggest bust in NFL history.

Here's some homework for you after you wake up from your afternoon nap:
    Ryan Leaf
    Todd Marinovich
    Tony Mandarich
    Brian Bosworth

  6. Not saying I agree with everything in the article, but none of those guys had the hype Reggie had coming out of college, or the pure marketability. I don't think he's a total bust as he's done well his first two years, but if he has half the talent he was hyped up to have out of school (I saw him play, but college is different from the pros), then he's only scratched the surface of what he can do.

  7. And, for the record, my call for biggest bust in NFL history? Gotta be Mike Vick....

  8. let's see, he led all running backs in receiving as a rookie. he had a 4 touchdown game last year. He has the longest run in NFC Championship game history. he single hadnedly beat the Bucs last year and the Seahawks this year. He leads all running backs in receiving this year. He'll have abput 1500 yards from scrimmage. man what a bust! Just being in the game, defenses have to waste a man spying him. It frees up Brees. Ask any defensive coordinator. OOps, that would require research. Nice that your Mom lets you use her blog. Maybe you better watch another draft or 2, lol. i think Ryan leaf, Todd marinovich, and a bunch of former Cleveland and Detroit picks may beg to argue...

  9. one word .....................
    STUPID!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  10. If this article's main intent was to get website hits, then congratulations. You achieved that, in spades. If you thought you were providing anything original, or even realistic for that matter, you failed. BIG TIME.

  11. Reggie Bush was a big part of the best Saints team in the history of the franchise. He helped a franchise go the further it has EVER gone in its HISTORY. He has scored a touchdown in every playoff game he has ever played.. including a 70+ yard catch (big play ability?) against the BEST defense in the league at the time. All of this for a franchise that had only one playoff win before last year. All this after said franchise experienced the worst natural disaster in the history of this country.

Reggie Bush does not even have two full seasons under his belt. So far, he has not failed to make an NFC championship game in his career. Last year he had 1300+ total yards of offense (not including playoffs), and 88 receptions (2nd most ever by a rookie). He also had a punt return for a TD to WIN a crucial division game. This year he has close to 900 total yards of offense (with 5 games to play) and is already at 70 receptions, he will likely break 100 for the season.

All of this has been done as the most "over-hyped" player in the game.. what does this mean? DEFENSES KEY IN ON HIM GAME IN AND GAME OUT, you will NEVER see a game where a team says "we are gonna make reggie bush beat us".. it just doesnt happen, he is target #1

You make the statement that without Deuce, Reggie should have better numbers? How so? Without Deuce, that takes away from the effectiveness of reggie bush... and takes one less weapon away from the saints offense, allowing the defense to put even MORE focus on Reggie Bush

Don't forget, Reggie was a part of the NUMBER ONE offense in the league, not Joseph Addai, Lawrence Maroney, or Maurice Jones-Drew.

For the record: Reggie Bush: 1300 yards of offense, 9 total TD
Joseph Addai: 1400 yards of offense, 8 total TD
    L. Maroney : 940 yards of offense, 7 total TD
    M. Jones-Drew: 1380 yards of offense, 16 total TD

I would say Bush compares with ANY of those running backs from that draft... the difference? NONE OF THEM were as highly regarded coming in as Reggie Bush, NONE of them were keyed in (at least at first) by the defense as much as Reggie Bush

David Carr and Ryan Leaf are "busts"... not Reggie Bush

The writer points out his longest run (only 22 yards).. but fails to mention his multiple big gains in the passing game (and his 30+ yard run in the playoff game against the eagles)

  12. yep. Bush only caught 88 balls last year. he only leads all rbs in receptions this year. he only scored 9 tds llast year, and will have more total yards from scrimmage than all but a few players. what a collassal bust. Lol....I guess you're not old enough to remember Ryan Leaf, Tony Mandarich, Brian Bosworth (any hype there?), Akili Smith, Lawrence Philips, Heath Shuler, Blair Thomas, Kijana Carter, Andre Ware, Bruce Pickens, Rick Mirer, Rashaan Salaam, Peter Warrick, Charles Rogers among others who have performed far less than Bush, who was the star player on the NFL's number 1 offense last year. Next time ask your Mom before you use her blog...

  13. Lol, by the way, there are apparently 3 diferent "Johns" posting. Does this website assign the name John to new posters? Does it give them all the same avatar? bizarre

  14. well its good to see i can get some people rowdy with my article, but once again none of you have proven anything, except anger. Heck, well i can't say Ryan Leaf, but Todd had one maybe two good games. But i sure don't remember Ryan being compared as the next John Elway or the next Joe Montana. No I'm not Mario Williams, if I was I would say umm hey wasn't it my 27th ranked rushing defense that held Reggie to umm 34 yards and oh by the way we won that game. And the leading running backs in receiving, that's real comical seeing that he has 70 receptions for 400+ yards. 70 receptions? 2 more than your starting wide receiver?? 6 more than Terrell Owens and 2 less than Randy Moss. Since some people want research here is some research for you, umm who leads running backs in fumbles? Who has the most receptions and the fewest yards? Ronnie Brown almost has the same numbers as Reggie and he hasn't played in 3 weeks. He has two rushing yards more than Ron Dayne, need I say more. The only thing anyone of you had said is he's leading running backs in receiving and the he will have 1500 yards from the scrimmage by seasons end, yeah i can see it now Reggie Bush 90 catches for 700 yards...180 rushing attempts for 700 yards! Good year! A lot of guys aside from Brian Westbrook have half the catches he got and almost the same yards, and twice the rushing yards. A guy that touches the ball that many times, should not have those numbers. Hell, his own coach called him out. Hey Justin Fargas also has over 900 yards from total scrimmage, he's on his way to have a total 1500 yards from scrimage....Good year!!

  15. and um John number 1, do the saints need a running back or another wide reciever, there's no deuce and Reggie your #1 star is your starter... where are the Saints ranked in rushing? Umm John no. 2, I agree with most of those, especially Peter Warrick, but the hype wasn't even close to what Reggie got and most of you know it. Saying that Reggie is your number 1 star is almost like slapping Deuce and Drew Brees and the Maques Colston in the face. Dang are all of you from USC? and John number 3 yeah this is getting weird.

  16. Dyson, here is your biggest problem.. you look at reggie as a running back

I look at reggie as a weapon... he has the ability to draw the focus of the Defense, and he has the ability to play many different positions..

"do you need a running back or a wide receiver"... we didn't draft reggie to be the starting everydown backfield running back, and if you think we did, you are ignorant

You act as though 1500 yards from scrimmage is a poor season.. i don't understand that reasoning.

As for his own coach calling him out... isn't that what a coach is supposed to do? Do you think ANY Nfl player goes through an entire season without ever getting negative feedback from a coach? As if your original post wasn't a big enough stretch, you are really stretching it now.

As for the fumbles, he is tied with clinton portis with 5... 80 percent of the league has 3+..

You still fail to even point out how Bush is a bust when compared to the other "rookie studs" from the same draft... and his team's performance throughout the season

if Bush was so bad, how did the saints have so much success???? If he got SOO many touches and was SOO bad with them, howd the saints get one win away from a superbowl?

And you also fail to recognize the amount of defensive focus put on bush game in and game out...

you have failed to realize there is more to football and a football player than merely stats, if that were not the case, Vince Young would be the worst player in the game (surely you don't consider him better than reggie bush based on stats do you?)

  17. ^^^ It is one thing to claim Reggie Bush is not living up to the hype (what player COULD have lived up to the hype he got?)

It is another thing to declare him the "biggest bust of all time".. that statement is just unfounded and has no proof... Bush may not be living up to what we thought, but he IS producing.. without a doubt he is a weapon and without a doubt he is effective in the Saints offense.

  18. one more thing..

Bush wasn't even the every down, starting backfield running back in college... why do people expect him to come in and be one in the pros??!?!?!?!?!

Bush has incredible hands and is almost unmatched in space... that is why Deuce was such an important part of the offense, it opened up the offense for Reggie to be in the slot or in the backfield with deuce

your claim that reggie should produce more without deuce is just simply inaccurate.

If pierre thomas or aaron stecker can step up the game and pick up 15-20 solid carries a game (like last week).. the saints will be much more effective

  19. Ok Dyson we get it seriously, your Mother never meant for you to find out about her and Reggie that way. Its enough really, your going to have to get use to STEP DADDY REGGIE. Your momma calls him MR PRESIDENT and gives him that good ole Bill treatment.

WHO DAT IZ YO DADDY BUSH 25 ALL THE WAY BABY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  20. Dyson Kincaid? Dyson? Heh, I guess it's appropriate. Your job in life is to suck which you do very well.

  21. Dyson Kincaid? Dyson? Heh, I guess it's appropriate. Your job in life is to suck which you do very well.

  22. Get real man, just because you media types are dissapointed because
he hasn't been Gayle Sayers,it doesn't mean he's been Ryan Leif either.

    Reggie a dissapointment? - perhaps

    Reggie a bust?- No way.

  23. As a running back, I would say Reggie is a disappointment, but not yet a bust. However, as a receiver/running back, I think he is pretty good.

As someone who has watched everyone of Reggie's college games and approximately 1/2 of his pro games, I would say that he does run scared in the pros compared to college where he was a fairly physical runner. I am tired of seeing him run out of bounds on almost every run play. He seems to fall over 1/2 the time because he is dancing so much now. He never did that in college. It was his ability to cut at full speed which made him so special, but he seems to dance to much toward the sideline in the pros rather than try to cut and go upfield.

  24. Reggie Bush this year is a disappointment but you can't blame just Reggie Bush, The coaching has to be called into question, there has been alot of poor calls in past 7 games, then you have to put in equation that Reggie had Deuce along-side him as he had in college, and was producing much better with the 1-2 punch, Deuce is out for the season and possibly his career so Reggie is pretty much all alone out there, Reggie does have a problem out running his blockers, but last year it wasn't a problem because Reggie found his own hole's and zoomed through them with little or no help, if we move him around from RB to WR sometimes in a rotation like we did last year im willing to bet you'll probably see another Jerry Rice out there.

Calling Reggie a Bust makes anyone "even Rival Fans" look NFL Illiterate, Disappointment? to some degree yes, but it's not totally on him, there's more than one man on the field..

Also this Dumb ass Article can only be written by some Hostile Houston fan that is still mad they didn't get Reggie, Mario Williams is still a crappy Draft pick compared to Reggie and it will always historically be, Trashing Reggie will not change your team history.

  25. I wouldn't call this guy a "media type." He's just a schmoe like the rest of us posting an opinion. ANYONE can register here and write an "article." This is nothing more than a glorified message board post.

  26. I just wanted to say:

    SAINTSREPORT.COM Rules!!!

  27. Laughing at all the homers swinging from Bush's twig and berries. This guy's article is correct. Bush is the most overhyped bust ever. Leaf wasn't over hyped.

  28. Laughing at all the homers swinging from Bush's twig and berries. This guy's article is correct. Bush is the most overhyped bust ever. Leaf wasn't over hyped.

You are either very young and not familiar with NFL history,or you're just being
a troll. Bush isn't a bust and not even close to being one. Fwiw, Tony Mandarich
was the most overhyped "Bust" ever. Sports Illustrated placed his pic on the cover
with the caption "The Geatest Offensive Lineman Ever". The truth was Mandarich
was a steroid pumped, one trick drive blocker who never faced NFL quality DE's
during his time at Michigan ST. He lacked the proper footwork to handle NFL speed
rushers. In his 1st NFL start,Kevin Green of the Rams abused him for 4 sacks before
he was pulled from the lineup.

Study the history man, it's a beautiful thing if you read with an open mind ;)

  29. Chew tabacco...Chew tobacco...Chew tobacco...spit...If you ain't a SAINTS fan you ain't shit
    Who Dat.

  30. Reggie is a bust... you heard it here. Ricky Williams was a better pick. LOL /sarcasm off

  31. My thoughts exactly......

  32. Reggie Bush is a bust. NOT!!!! Maybe underachiever as arunning back. Reggie Bush, at USC, ran behind the Trojans infamous Student Body Right running player. He was LenDale White's (Titans) Lightning of Thunder N Lightning.Bush was never asked to run the ball between the tackle at USC. That was White's teriritory. NFL running have to be willing to run between the tackles. Warrick Dunn (Falcons) is the same caliber back as Bush, and he does inside running. Bush has stubbornly refuse to get his runs inside. Although,he has taken runs inside, he still will not use or follow his blockers or go through run lanes the blocking schemmes provide. Reggie Bush isn"t, won"t be, and isn't expected to be, the type of running back like Deuce McAllister. So, a question to the author of the article I am commenting to, why do you put Reggie Bush in such a dubious category, NFL Draft Bust? Doesn't he have the right to develop, since you did say that the second or third year he should show some improvement? UMMM! I believe he is half through his second season. DUHHHH!!!!

  33. they need to put reggie as a reciever n use him as a randle el type player like they did in pittsburgh n quit alll the running back gimmicks cause its real obvious he is not a real back come on give pierre thomas some more touches put reggie n the slot as a reciever u got a sick reciever core a better wes welker 4 real

  34. use stupid fucks reggie sucks dick in the nfl lauhin my ass offffffffffffffffffff hahahahaha deal with it he sucks sucks i could get 32 yards if i played u stpid fucks he betta go back 2 USC with all that bullshit or step his fuckin game up real tallk ni99a shiittttt

  35. i would like to point out reggie WAS the offensive rookie of the year last year....oh wait, that was Vince Young....well...he was the Rookie of the Year in the NFC....wait....no, he wasn't that either...he had to be the Rookie of the Year on his team....um, no...that was Marques Colston...an undrafted free agent. Everyone at least has to admit, whether you like him or not, he has not lived up to the expectations.

  36. First of all, Colston was drafted, although it was the 7th round. I guess you didn't know that, because you obviously don't know your football. Reggie Bush has been playing injured and has been the main back since Mcallister went out, which is when they went on that 4 game winning streak by the way. So he has done more than his part in carrying the load for the Saints.

  37. yeah baby! Who Dat.

  38. REGGIE BUST!!!! Addai > Bush. McFadden > Bush. Peterson > Bush. Lynch > Bush. Jones-Drew >Bush. Moroney > Bush. o(-.^0). Man i would move bush into WR. He could do good in the Broncos offense though ^^

  39. Right now, Reggie Bush is the biggest bust in the history of the NFL Draft... AS A RUNNER.

Let me clarify. There are players that have been drafted in the top five that have fallen out of the league, such as Ryan Leaf, but none have entered with as much hype and fanfare as Bush. Before this guy was drafted he was already one of the league s highest paid endorsers. If it wasn t Peyton Manning in every commercial, it was Bush.

Remember those awkward Subway ads that stretched across the bottom of two pages in Sporting News that were keeping a count on his rushing yards and touchdowns? Then after week 2 the stats mysteriously disappered after they had to put down 55 and ZERO.

He was immediately pushed to the forefront of the league in an effort to make him one of the new faces of the NFL. Even though Drew Brees was the proven veteran, it was Reggie Bush and the Saints. The expectations for this player were huge, but certainly attainable. Everyone was looking for him to be a 1,000 yard rusher. Not immediately, but his production at this point has to be considered a colossal disappointment by anyone s standards.

He s rushed for 100-yards one time in 26 games. How many featured backs could get away with this and keep their job? Everyone has a bad game here and there, but that seems to be the norm for Bush. Like his week 11 performance against Houston when he picked up 34 yards on 15 carries. Wasn t he supposed to be the guy that averaged 6.5 yards a carry like Adrian Peterson?

  40. YES, U R RIGHT ....U R BEING WAY 2 HARSH REGARDING R.B.'S PERFROMANCE "RIGHT NOW"!!!! THIS IS IS SECOND YEAR WITH THE NEW ORLEANS SAINTS...& IN MY OPINION HE & HIS TEAMMATES R DOING THE BEST THEY CAN WITH & WITHOUT INJURIES. YES, I WAS SURPRISE WIN THE N.O. SAINTS STARTED THE SEASON (0-4) & THAT WAS W/ DUECE PLAYING. BUT, HOW MANY 1ST YEAR DRAFT PLAYERS ALONG W/ THEIR TEAMS WIN THEIR DIVISION CHAMPIONSHIPS-NFC CHAMPIONS . NOT MANY... & I'M NOT SPEAKING OUT 4 #25 BECAUSE I HAVE CRUSH ON HIM, BUT BECAUSE OF THE TRUTH. HE IS A TALENTED ATHLETE....& FANS. SUPPORTERS & MEDIA SHOULDN'T BE SO EASY TO TURN ON HIM. CONSTRUCTIVE CRITCISM IS GREAT 4 US ALL , BUT IT HAS BEEN TERRIBLE THE WAY THE MEDIA & SOME FANS/ "SO-CALLED" SUPPORTERS" HAVE BEEN REACTING.
ARE IS IT SUPPOSE TO BE "REVERSE PSYCHOLOGY" OR SOMETHING....OBVIOUSLY "REG" HAS BEEN USE TO BEING APART OF MORE SUCCESSES THAN FAILURES REGARDING SPORTS SINCE HIS CHILDHOOD...SO THINK BEFORE U R SO QUICKLY TO NEGATIVELY CRITICISE HIM & OTHERS...THANK U!!!! BETH , JACKSON, MS

  41. This article is about one year too early. I completely agree that Bush has failed living up to the expectations. Doesn't mean he won't even though I don't think he will. Bush should be a wide receiver that occasionally gets to run the ball. He can't be a featured back. When you spend all of high school and college blowing past weak defenses and never getting hit it takes some time to realize the the majority of NFL lineman aren't dumb enough to fall for his jukes. Who would have thought that Polamalu, Tatupu and Justin Fargas would be the best USC players in the NFL? Carson Palmer looks lost. Bush has been above-average at best, LenDale White has had a good season but his commitment is still in question after a lackluster rookie campaign. Winston Justice, Shaun Cody, Kenechi Udeze, Mike Williams and Keary Colbert. Dwayne Jarrett and Steve Smith were both useless. Mike Patterson has been okay. Darrnell Bing is on the 49ers practice squad. And I still haven't brought up Matt Leinart. Considering the weapons at his disposal, Leinart looks to be an even bigger bust than Bush.

  42. you are forgetting about deangelo williams. he haven't broke in the scene because he is in the shadows of deshaun foster and carolina pass the ball in any conditions. he has the best carry average of the backs in his class

  43. even though he in jail, he did lead his team to the playoffs numerous of times. He's not an NFL bust, he justed got busted for dogg fighting.

  44. Dont get me wrong when i say this but Reggie is a great player and potenial hall of famer and your right does need to stay off commercials and on the field but the media put this man up there i think the media needs leave this man along and let him make his money

  45. I agree with writer. Look how many USC players are just average in the pros...M.Williams..Leinhart...White. Reggie Bush is a leaper so it looked cool and rode USC sofet scheduling and hype machine.

When LSU beat SC Bush wasnt even on the field in some key downs..Thats says coaches know more than fans and even media hype talking heads. I am a Raiders fan so I know all about 80 percent of what fans and so called writers say is horse-shit. Like Kiffin not wearing enough Raider garb for the liking of the writers. Pathetic journalism

Reggie Bush took money in college and partied. He went in the NFL got more money and even partied more..Hes way overrated period.

I am sure the writer of this article would appreciate more feedback from mature readers. Anyone uses "your an idiot..probably and most likely has a small penis and nicknames himself.."little reggie".

  46. Eric,

When did LSU beat USC? You say Bush was there? Ha, get your facts straight, country bumpkin...

    1. hey R,
      Excuse me Country Bumpkin,
wrong guess punk, I live in San Francisco so far from it. I could careless who beat USC stat nerd.
The Point is Bush is overrated. You got anything else you like to point out buddy.
You got something intelligent to add let me know....I am sure the spots community cant wait.

Only teenage losers use "HA"....go text your g/f..let her know how cool you are !
ever in the city let me know...Ill eat our brains punk bitch...get your facts rights..you be few seconds from hitting the curb sissy buy...KO your smart ass!
      ..FU
      yeah ZAC
I said FU little bitch to this R guy... My name is R...loser

  47. you guys make me ashamed to be a football fan. the back and forth between most of you guys is sickning. its take nothing now for people that cast a profanity laced insult towards someone. got alot of big talkers hear from the saftey of their computer rooms. grow up guys. i like to drink beer and i cuss and all that good stuff but this kind of thing makes me ashamed to be a football fan and a american in general.
