There are always those few athletes who chase a dream well beyond their prime and there are those that realize that the time to get out is now.

Someone that got out at the right time:

Jerome Bettis

The Bus retired after achieving his dream of a Super Bowl victory when the Pittsburgh Steelers defeated the Seattle Seahawks 21-10 in Super Bowl XL.  The only reason that Bettis even came back to play in that magical season was the quarterback Ben Roelithsberger promised him before training camp no less, that if he returned they would win a world championship.

Someone that wore out their welcome:

Barry Bonds

Barry Bonds may very well be the most enigmatic figure in all of sports as well as the most polarizing. You either love him or hate him. As for this writer, a native of the Steel City, my everlasting memory of Barry is him not being able to throw out Sid Bream in Game 6 of the 1992 NLCS allowing the Atlanta Braves to force a game 7 that they eventually won.
