NHL End of Season Awards 2010: Picks
Lady Byng Trophy: Most Gentlemanly Player
When I think of this award, I think of the guy who doesn’t piss the opponents off. And when I think of that type of player, Pavel Datsyuk is my front runner.
He is very sportsmanlike, which is rare quality in the NHL nowadays.
Selke Trophy: Best Defensive Forward
The race for the Selke Trophy is incredibly close this year.
Datsyuk has won it the last couple of years but I don’t see him winning it this year. The only reason he might win is because it’s become a tradition for him to win.
I’m biased if I say Jordan Staal, but I don’t think he’ll win it, even though I do think he has made a case for it. I don’t have to boast about Staal, he’s made his name separate from that of his brothers.
I’m shocked Jonathan Toews didn’t get nominated. He is someone I figured would not only be on the ballot but would be front runner. With that being said, my pick is USA's Ryan Kesler.
Calder Trophy: Rookie of the Year
This one seems to be up in the air. I haven’t seen a true front runner.
I can’t pick a goalie so Howard’s out. My pick would be Matt Duchene of Colorado. He’s made a name for himself in his first year. Myers is definitely a close second and could easily be the winner. We’ll see.
Norris Trophy: Best Defenseman
It comes down to Drew Doughty vs. Duncan Keith.
Mike Green has worked to get this nomination but I do not see him winning. Duncan Keith has lived under the radar for some time. He has been in the picture but has been in the shadow of Chicago’s big stars. Now he is the only candidate from their team and should rightfully win it.
Vezina Trophy: Best Goalie
This year’s goalies have been inconsistent, which is a given since you can’t have a goalie who can play spectacular every single game.
The only nominee that deserves this award is Ryan Miller. He became famous after his Olympic debut and deserves this award.
Bill Masterton Award: Perseverance and Dedication to Hockey
Kurtis Foster has been dealt blow after blow. Recently he and his wife lost a child. He’s recovered from injuries and I see him being a big name for the Lightning next year.
Ted Lindsay Award: Voted on by NHLPA
Henrik Sedin seems like the obvious candidate. He has proven himself in the NHL apart from his brother.
Hart Memorial Trophy: League MVP
Who deserves to win it? Sidney Crosby.
Crosby has shown that every year he can work on and get better at what he failed to do the year before. Last year he was criticized for not scoring. Now he has the Rocket Richard trophy.
He wasn’t doing well in faceoffs, now he is one of the leaders in face off wins.
He plays on the penalty kill, sticks up for his teammates and is the face of the NHL and Pittsburgh Penguins. He has lived in this role since he got in the NHL and has been unjustly criticized by fans for the overexposure he gets.
Blame the NHL for that one. Crosby has brought hockey to where it is today.
Mark Messier Leadership Award
This award should come down to either Shane Doan, who was a big influence in the uphill turnaround for Phoenix, or Sidney Crosby.
