Formula 1 qualifying is a chance for drivers to show how good their cars and their driving really are. The format in which this has been done over the years has changed many times, but I think it's time we got back to basics.
Get rid of the shootout sessions; get rid of the one-lap qualifying. What we need is something simple.
Who remembers the 12-lap qualifying? For me this was the fairest way to get the best out of each car.
Each team had 12 laps, including in and out laps, to set a time. Okay, some teams like Ferrari and McLaren used to wait for the smaller teams to put some rubber down, but the small teams will never have a problem with going out first.
Occasionally, you used to get teams waiting for the rain to stop so there would be no track action for most of the session, but this way was the fairest and most simple way to qualify. Every team had the same number of laps and one hour to do them in.
Even though this maybe not so good for the spectators, I believe it's fairer for the teams and drivers.
Alternatively, we could always get rid of qualifying altogether. To make F1 even fairer, teams could start the race in the reverse order they finished. This would mean that whoever won the race last time would start from the back and if they were good they might finish the next race in say, 6th.
Whatever system you choose it will be unpopular with someone, but I'd like to see them stick with a format for a reasonable length of time and not change it every season or two!
