Reggie Wayne – No Show at Camp

Paul RaymondCorrespondent IJune 4, 2010

Calm down Indianapolis Colts’ fans it won’t be the end of the world this weekend when Reggie Wayne misses the mandatory mini-camp. It’s just one of those things that is expected when a player like him is ready for a raise. I know some of you will started asking yourselves already, will he hold out of training camp? what kind of shape will he show up in? and things of that nature. But let’s look at the reasons you shouldn’t worry. One is that player and coach have already spoke.

Wayne has talked to coaches about his decision not to attend minicamp, including a conversation with coach Jim Caldwell, according to the source. (from Jason La Canfora of the NFL Network)

It’s always a good thing when both sides are talking internally and not to the media. It’s not like the typical unhappy player who goes to the media with his displeasure and then states it even more as he skips camps and holds out. Wayne and Caldwell have talked and I bet you they’ve come to an understanding.

Wayne knows the deal, there are multiple Colts up for renegotiations. Yes, he’s probably one of the most important players on the team but there is someone more worthy of another contract change and even more important then Wayne. And that’s Peyton Manning. I have no doubts in my mind the Colts will re-up with Wayne once Peyton is taking care of and I’m sure Caldwell has let Reggie know this.

For those of you thinking this is a new thing for Wayne and he’s being selfish think again. He’s skipped OTA’s numerous times throughout his career, the only difference here is this is the first mandatory one skipped. But what has happened after missing workouts? He’s come back in great shape and people don’t even question his decision and how can you? He continually misses workouts, shows up in shapes and then kicks opposing defenses asses throughout the season as evident by his six straight 1000 yard plus seasons.

Wayne is scheduled to make less then $6 million per season over the last two years of his contract, which is way underpaid for what he brings to the table. Yea, its his fault for signing a six year deal but who know he’d wind up so damn good??? The Colts know he’s underpaid and they’ll take care of him, its a more then fair organization when it comes to that type of stuff.

So Colts’ fans don’t worry, I know you will freak not seeing Wayne on the field this weekend but remember this. Him and Peyton have worked together for many, many years now so I don’t think there is any chance of on field chemistry being damaged.

So just sit back, relax and remember its only June 4th and there is still over a month till training camp. Now if we are having this conversation then, maybe you should start worrying.
