Sporting News and several other major sports sites, citing the New York Post, are reporting that the Warriors have traded a protected first-round pick to the New Jersey Nets for PG Marcus Williams.

Williams, who was drafted 22nd overall in 2006, averaged 5.6 points and 2.6 assists per game last year, while recovering from injury. He was expendable because the Nets recently acquired Keyon Dooling from the Magic.

His assist-to-turnover ratio is about two-to-one. He is a decent free throw shooter at about 83%. His field goal and three-point percentages are both around 38.

Williams comes cheaply, making only about $1.5 million per year.

Marcus' best game last year was an eight points, 13 assists, and seven rebounds in 30 minutes against Indiana, although he did score 25 in a game as well.

Will he be the starting point guard this season for the Warriors?

  1. I think between Marcus Williams and CJ Watson, we have a decent PG platoon. We can also go big a lot of times by sliding Monta to the 1, and Jax to the 2, Maggette to the 3, etc.

Hopefully, this was a move made in order to keep Azibuike, now that Louis Williams seems out of the picture.

Williams never got a fair shot to prove himself in new jersey after he was injured last year.
I have heard he can be less than motivated at times, and that is the biggest question mark. He is definately a good enough passer. If he can just become a better defender, we may have gotten the PG we were looking for really inexpensively.

  2. I agree, the pick is even protected. And he's young (22).

  3. The answer to your question is no because a combination of Ellis and Williams on defense means one of the weakest "defensive" back courts in the NBA. They both do not defend at all, unless Nellie ofcourse wants that defensive mentality to occur. Another thing, he can't be a starter at the expense of SJax who will most likely be playing shooting guard next season. Plus Corey Maggette will certainly not give up his starting spot. Best thing is having Marcus be a back-up for Mississippi Bullet...and that's what is likely to occur.

    1. You're right, I forgot about Maggette. That makes Williams a sixth man at best, unless a trade is in the works involving Jackson. I'm ok with Williams as a backup for a few seasons; it'll keep his value low if we decide to resign him when Captain Jack is gone.
