Anaheim, Ca - Coming off a three game sweep of the defending Champion Boston Red Sox, the Angels had won their previous five straight.
Enter Paul Byrd, former Angels right-hander, and the rest of his Cleveland Indians Teammates. The Tribe struck early, but the Angels responded when Garrett Anderson scored off Jeff Mathis' single in the second to tie the game at 1 apiece.
Then Cleveland's bats started thumping, and the Angels bats, as has been a trend this season, went back to sleep.
Stymied by Byrd, who pitched for the Angels in 2005, the Halos managed to put together 10 hits Monday night, but only managed to score two runs. Alternately, the Indians had a bit of a power display working, with three home runs, two of them for 2 runs, off Angel starter Ervin Santana. Santana's line was somewhat deceiving though, because for the most part, he pitched a great game. It just wasn't as good as Byrd's, and the Indians hung on to win the opening game of a three game stint in Anaheim.
In a tale of two opposite ends of the AL Spectrum, Anaheim came into the game 60-38, the best record in all of baseball. The Indians, at 43-54 to start the night, were among the bottom dwellers of the American League.
Jered Weaver (8-8) takes the mound tonight for the Angels against Matt Ginter (1-0). Ginter is making his second start of the season for the Tribe.
