"Always the bridesmaid, never the bride." That old adage could be trotted out for Spain at every international tournament in living memory.

That all changed two years ago when they won the Euro 2008.

They head into South Africa as one of the tournament’s favourites, boasting a squad that most managers would kill for. The support from the stands won’t be too bad either...

Nagore Aranburu - Xabi Alonso

Alonso married his long-term girlfriend Nagore last year.

The elegant Nagore is an actress and the pair have two children, a boy called Jontxu Alonso Aranburu and a girl named Ane Alonso.

Patricia González - David Villa

Another squad member that married his childhood sweetheart (noticing a pattern here?).

Villa will be able to count on the support of his wife Patricia as he aims to fire Spain to World Cup glory.

Olalla Dominguez - Fernando Torres

El Nino married childhood sweetheart Olalla last year and she gave birth to a daughter, Nora, in July.

They've been together since Torres' Atletico days, meaning she is certainly not a gold digger.

Anna - Andres Iniesta

Unlike in England, a number of Spain's top players are intensely private, keeping their exploits confided to the back pages.

Iniesta is one such player. The Barcelona stalwart is currently going out with a girl called Anna, and that's pretty much that.

Lorena Bernal - Mikel Arteta

The Everton midfielder isn’t in Spain’s squad for the tournament, but I think his wife Lorena deserves a mention.

Waking up next to her every morning probably makes missing out on the World Cup bearable.

Nuria - Gerard Pique

Not a lot is known about the Barcelona defender's girlfriend, including her second name, but one thing is for certain: she's gorgeous.

Pique is a lucky guy.

Carla - Cesc Fabregas

Fabregas' other half is Barcelona born Carla, a psychology student who has been going out with the Arsenal maestro for a number of years.

Amaia Salamanca - Sergio Ramos

The next segment of this slideshow is dedicated to the litany of exes that defender Sergio Ramos and goalkeeper Iker Casillas have racked up.

In fact, you could probably dedicate a whole slideshow to them.

First up on Ramos' list is actor and model Nani Gaitan.

Nani Gaitan - Sergio Ramos

Ramos likes his models, and it's not hard to see why.

Another old flame is 34-year-old Nani Gaitan, who has appeared in a number of television shows in Spain.

The two were an item around the time of Spain's triumph in Euro 2008, but things cooled down after that.

Elisabeth Reyes - Sergio Ramos (you guessed it)

Just how does he do it?

Another one of Ramos' conquest is Elisabeth Reyes, who won Miss Spain in 2006 and has also competed in the Miss Universe competition.

Eva Gonzalez - Iker Casillas

A Miss Universe 2003 contestant, Eva Gonzalez has had an on-off relationship with Casillas.

The beauty has hosted the Spanish reality TV show "Dímelo al oído" and has graced numerous catwalks and magazine covers.

Ariadne Artiles - Iker Casillas

Casillas hooked up with Ariadne Artiles—another model—when his relationship with Eva Gonzalez turned sour.

Some guys have all the luck!

Sara Carbonero - Iker Casillas

This sexy senorita (might as well get that bit of alliteration in) is none other than Sara Carbonero, a sports reporter for La Sexta (no sniggering at the back there).

She is Iker Casillas' current girlfriend, and rumour has it that the Spanish keeper and team mate Cristiano Ronaldo had a little wager as to who could woo her first.

At the moment she's number one in Casillas' heart and at the top of this list as well.
