Paulie Malignaggi Not Retiring, Eyeing European Welterweight Title
Many thought that the bout between Paulie Malignaggi and Amir Khan was a “make or break” for Malignaggi, and that he would surely retire if he couldn’t back up all the smack talk he’s slung for the past several months. However, despite the heart-wrenching loss, the Magic Man , 29, isn’t ready to disappear from the sport of boxing quite yet.
According to ESPN’s boxing analyst Dan Rafael, Malignaggi plans to move back to Italy.
Malignaggi, a dual citizen in both the U.S. and Italy, has family from Sircusa, Italy and actually lived there from infancy until he turned six.
Malignaggi, the former IBF junior welterweight champ, said that he is financially stable enough to quit boxing, but his drive as a boxer fuels his determination to proceed with his career.
He also plans to return to the welterweight division, which would pose an interesting matchup considering Matthew Hatton—Ricky Hatton’s brother—holds that particular title.
Ricky Hatton beat Malignaggi by way of technical knockout in the 11th round and Malignaggi has since been attempting to get a rematch with him
Malignaggi said boxing fans can expect to see him in the ring anywhere from late summer to early fall.
