The Detroit Lions have decided to stay with a long standing tradition, and I don’t mean losing. John Niyo of the Detroit News reports that the Lions have decided to go another season without cheerleaders on the sidelines and don’t plan on changing that anytime soon. It kind of sucks for their fans, I mean really what do they have to cheer for??
“My focus has been what happens on the field,” Lions president Tom Lewand said. “I don’t think that the folks in Green Bay and Pittsburgh and some of the other places get asked a lot about cheerleaders. And one of the big reasons for that is because they’re successful on the field. And that’s where our focus is. The more entertainment we can provide by winning football games, that’s where our focus should be.”
Lewand has a point when your team is winning no one cares that you don’t have cheerleaders. There are five other football teams in the NFL that don’t have cheerleaders, the Chicago Bears, Green Bay Packers, Cleveland Browns, Pittsburgh Steelers and the New York Giants. Four of those teams are perennial contenders in their respective divisions and the fans really focus whats on the field.
The problem with Lewand’s statement thou is that the Lions aren’t anywhere close to putting a winning product on the field, they need to provide their fans some type of excitement. Don’t they? He can be focused on trying to win football games while also providing the wonderful sights that a group of cheerleaders can bring. All you have to do is add someone to the payroll who can watch over the ladies.
Take a look at the Philadelphia Eagles and Dallas Cowboys, they have probably the two most notable groups of cheerleaders in the NFL and both teams are almost always in contention. So doing both is possible.
While I know nothing will change, Lewand needs to really reconsider his stance, I’m sure the people of Detroit could use some type of pleasure that their football team can’t provide. Instead they’ll continue to be one of only two teams in the NFL that have never had cheerleaders on the sidelines.
So with that being said here are some pictures of what the fans of the Lions and Giants have NEVER seen on the field.
