In 2004, the organizers of the Madrid Masters Series event (now called the Mutua Madrilena Madrid Open) caused quite a stir when they replaced the traditional children and teenagers with fashion models as ball girls.
Opinions and comments abounded about the controversial decision. A Spanish left wing politician derided the decision as sexist and frivolous.
Some fans criticized the decision because the ball girls didn't know enough about tennis. All of the ball girls undergo two weeks of training prior to tournament action.
Still others have criticized the decision to use models as taking attention away from the players and the actions.
Like it or hate it, the decision has caused controversy and created a ton of publicity that otherwise would be just another tournament on the ATP and, as of this year, WTA calendars.
