The Toronto Maple Leafs announced today that they will honour the numbers of both Doug Gilmour and Wendel Clark this upcoming season.

Clark, who was selected by Toronto first overall in the 1985 NHL entry draft, will be honoured in a pre-game ceremony on November 22nd prior to a game against the Chicago Blackhawks.

Gilmour, arguably the Maple Leafs most popular captain, will have his number raised to the rafters of the Air Canada Centre on January 31st, in a ceremony prior to a game between the Maple Leafs and Sidney Crosby's Pittsburgh Penguins.

The Maple Leafs continue their tradition of not retiring numbers, instead choosing to honour them.  The only retired numbers in franchise history are the number 5 of Bill Barilko, and the number 6 of Ace Bailey.

  1. gilmour is one of the most underrated players in league history

    1. How so? He was a huge fan favorite in Toronto. The guy was loved by the media as well. He's eligible to become a member of the hall of fame. I'm not taking anything away from him. He was a great player. But underrated is not one of the words that come to mind when I think Doug Gilmour.

Cheers to both Doug and Wendel.

  2. Glad to see Doug Gilmour, get honored by having his number retired and hopefully the HOF will be calling him soon.

  3. I still remember when he was playing for Montreal I think it was, Gilmour went into the penalty and was so pissed he slammed the door and the glass just exploded into pieces. It took the arena guys forever to find the replaceable glass. Glad to see him and Wendel getting the just honors.

  4. My post was removed?
Why because the facts on Gilmour were offensive?
It is a matter of public record what happened to Gilmour in St Louis.
Same for his actions off the rink in Calgary.
Being a Die Hard Leafs fan I have never understood the God Like worship Gilmour get's in Toronto.
