Moments, moments, moments.
It is natural human nature to remember those little moments.
Birthdays, Christmas, your Wedding Day, the birth of your children.
Those we never forget.
So why should we change when it comes to watching movies?
The most memorable moments in movies are always the quotable ones.
So why don't we take a look at the 25 most memorable sports movie quotes of all time. Enjoy.
Quote: "If you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge a ball."
I thought Macs didn't crash? Patches O'Houlihan proves that theory wrong. Just check out the video.
Quote: "We will be perfect in every aspect of the game. You drop a pass, you run a mile. You miss a blocking assignment, you run a mile. You fumble the football and I will break my foot off in your John Brown hind parts...and then you will run a mile. Perfection. Let's get to work."
This was one of the turning points in one of the greatest sports movies of all time. Coach Boone (played by Denzel Washington) demanded that his players play efficient football, and this is where he formally stated it.
Denzel delivered this speech flawlessly.
Quote: "Billy, listen to me. White men can't jump."
And if you need any further proof, check out highlights of Chris Anderson in the 2005 NBA Slam Dunk Contest.
Unfortunately, I couldn't find the video for this one, but to anybody who has ever seen the movie, this one is equally as sweet.
Quote: "The American Express Card. Don't steal home without it."
It was far from an important moment in "Major League," but when Willie Mays Hayes slid into home and recited this catch phrase we felt like the Indians were on top of the world.
No not the real Indians, they suck!
Quote: "You're killing me Smalls!"
Classic. Whether you've seen "The Sandlot" or not, chances are you've heard somebody recite those very words.
You're killing me Smalls, has been amongst the most recited movie lines of all time.
Quote: "I believe God made me for a purpose, but he also made me fast. And when I run, I feel His pleasure."
What, you didn't know God loved track?
Quote: "Quack! Quack! Quack! Quack! Quack!"
Don't lie, you quacked along.
Whether they had to get past the Hawks, Iceland, or the Varsity Warriors, you quacked with the Mighty Ducks like a duck out of his habitat.
We all got just as fired up as Charlie Conway and the Ducks in all three Mighty Ducks movies, and the quacks were a large part of it.
Quote: "I don't hate Balboa. I pity the fool!"
Mr. T can't walk two blocks without somebody asking him to say this. When you think of Mr. T, "I pity the fool" is the first thing that comes to mind. Always!
Quote: "I'll make it."
You know you're watching a good sports movie when you're surprised that the best player, and focus of the movie steps up to take the final shot.
Hoosiers was just that.
When Jimmy Chitwood told Coach Dale, "I'll make it," you knew he would, and yet it still shocked us all.
Quote: "There's no crying in baseball."
It has quickly become one of the unwritten rules of baseball: There's no crying in baseball. Period.
Quote: "You're gonna eat lightning, and you're gonna crap thunder!"
If there was ever a more badass sports movie line, I haven't heard it. Be honest, if somebody told you that you were going to eat lightning and crap thunder, would you be scared out of your mind?
That's what I thought.
Unfortunately, I couldn't find the video for this one, but I think I've found something else you might like.
Quote: "Great moments... are born from great opportunity. And that's what you have here, tonight, boys. That's what you've earned here tonight. One game. If we played 'em ten times, they might win nine. But not this game. Not tonight. Tonight, we skate with them. Tonight, we stay with them. And we shut them down because we can! Tonight, WE are the greatest hockey team in the world. You were born to be hockey players. Every one of you. And you were meant to be here tonight. This is your time. Their time is done. It's over. I'm sick and tired of hearing about what a great hockey team the Soviets have. Screw 'em. This is your time. Now go out there and take it. "
Any movie could give a corny, "we're the best team in the world tonight speech," but this one was special.
We all knew the U.S squad was going to go on to beat the Soviets, but this gave us a whole new understanding of "The Miracle on Ice."
Quote: "You can do it!"
Come on, you don't crack up every time Rob Schneider says this? Lies.
Quote: "Today, I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the Earth."
Lou Gehrig's farewell speech may be the greatest quote in the history of sports, but since Hollywood technically didn't come up with this quote it drops all the way to 12.
Quote: "Wax on. Wax off."
Teach karate and get your car washed at the same time? That's a win, win.
Quote: "This is where they fought the battle of Gettysburg. Fifty thousand men died right here on this field, fighting the same fight that we are still fighting among ourselves today. This green field right here, painted red, bubblin' with the blood of young boys. Smoke and hot lead pouring right through their bodies. Listen to their souls, men. I killed my brother with malice in my heart. Hatred destroyed my family. You listen, and you take a lesson from the dead. If we don't come together right now on this hallowed ground, we too will be destroyed, just like they were. I don't care if you like each other or not, but you will respect each other. And maybe... I don't know, maybe we'll learn to play this game like men"
Remember The Titans makes it's second appearance on this list, once again courtesy of Coach Boone (a la Denzel Washington). This time Boone inspires his interracial team to come together as one.
Quote: "The price is wrong, @#$%^"
This is, without a doubt, my favorite movie quote of all time. I can say without hesitation that I've seen this scene North of 50 times. And it still makes me laugh.
I also learned something from it: Never mess with Bob Barker.
Quote: "You're 5 foot nothin', 100 and nothin' and you have nearly a speck of athletic ability. And you hung in there with the best college football team in the land for two years. And you're gonna walk outta here with a degree from the University of Notre Dame. In this life, you don't have to prove nothin' to nobody but yourself."
Rudy is one of the greatest underdog stories of all time, and this speech sums it up in about two minutes. Let's take a look:
Quote: "It's in the hole!"
Easily one of the most memorable quotes in one of the most memorable movies of all time. I truly feel that it is physically impossible to not like Caddyshack.
Quote: "If you build it, they will come."
I was never a big "Field of Dreams" fan, but there's no denying the popularity of this quote. Easily one of the most recognized in movie history.
Quote: "If you put your effort and concentration into playing to your potential, to be the best that you can be, I don't care what the scoreboard says. At the end of the game, in my book, we're gonna be winners."
Coach Norman Dale made a few emotional speeches to his undermanned squad during the movie "Hoosiers" but this one takes the cake as the most famous and memorable.
Quote: "Juuuuuuuust a bit outside!"
If there were ever a quote perfect for a game, Harry Doyle's "Juuuuust a bit outside" would be it. It can be and is used so often with baseball.
Throwing pitches outside has become almost scary for pitchers thanks to Harry Doyle.
"I don’t know what to say, really. Three minutes to the biggest battle of our professional lives. All comes down to today, and either, we heal as a team, or we're gonna crumble. Inch by inch, play by play. Until we're finished. We're in Hell right now, gentlemen. Believe me. And, we can stay here, get the s**t kicked out of us, or we can fight our way back into the light. We can climb outta hell...one inch at a time. Now I can't do it for ya, I'm too old. I look around, I see these young faces and I think, I mean, I've made every wrong choice a middle-aged man can make. I, uh, I've pissed away all my money, believe it or not. I chased off anyone who's ever loved me. And lately, I can't even stand the face I see in the mirror. You know, when you get old, in life, things get taken from you. I mean, that's... that's... that's a part of life. But, you only learn that when you start losin' stuff. You find out life's this game of inches, so is football. Because in either game—life or football—the margin for error is so small. I mean, one half a step too late or too early and you don't quite make it. One half second too slow, too fast and you don't quite catch it. The inches we need are everywhere around us. They're in every break of the game, every minute, every second. On this team we fight for that inch. On this team we tear ourselves and everyone else around us to pieces for that inch. We claw with our fingernails for that inch. Because we know when add up all those inches, that's gonna make the f@%king difference between winning and losing! Between living and dying! I'll tell you this, in any fight it's the guy whose willing to die whose gonna win that inch. And I know, if I'm gonna have any life anymore it's because I'm still willing to fight and die for that inch, because that's what living is, the six inches in front of your face. Now I can't make you do it. You've got to look at the guy next to you, look into his eyes. Now I think ya going to see a guy who will go that inch with you. You're gonna see a guy who will sacrifice himself for this team, because he knows when it comes down to it you're gonna do the same for him. That's a team, gentlemen, and either, we heal, now, as a team, or we will die as individuals. That's football guys, that's all it is. Now, what are you gonna do?"
The single greatest speech in sports movie history. Every time I hear Al Pacino utter a single sentence from it, I imagine myself strapping on a helmet and running through somebody.
Vince Lombardi couldn't have said it better himself.
Quote: "Show me the money!"
If only he had hired Scott Boras...
Quote: "Yo, Adrian!"
Are you really surprised. If you're making a list of the greatest movie quotes of all time (sports or not) you won't get too far without mentioning this one.
