For the second time in as many offseasons, future Hall of Fame wide receiver Terrell Owens, 36, is unemployed and looking for work with a NFL club. After a so-so campaign with the Buffalo Bills in 2009 that saw Owens snag a near career low 55 receptions, there has been very little Owens-related offseason buzz for the first time in years.

Even though the 2009 season saw a decline in Owens’ perennially gaudy statistics, there is very little doubt that the former San Francisco 49er, Philadelphia Eagle, Dallas Cowboy, and Buffalo Bill can contribute to a NFL club in at least a limited capacity.

Despite boasting a resume that puts to shame nearly anyone not named Jerry Rice, Owens has long been viewed as a distraction by nearly everyone around the NFL. Owens’ perceived “me first” attitude has long overshadowed his 1,006 receptions, 14,951 yards, and 144 touchdowns. Even though Owens’ numbers have exceeded any possible expectations placed on the 1996 third-round draft pick, Owens will long be remembered as more of a character than league legend.

With the acquisition of Owens, a lucky NFL franchise won’t only receive a potential game-changing wide-out, but also the media and widespread attention that seems to follow the Chattanooga alum throughout his various stops in the NFL. And if Owens is willing to embrace the mentor role that comes with extensive league experience then it would prove to be a worthwhile venture to sign the six-time Pro Bowler to at least a short-term contract.
