Avram Grant has resigned. It seemed inevitable as the speculation linking him with the vacant West Ham post has grown, while today he has been linked with the FC Twente manager's job that has been vacated by Steve McClaren.

In the meantime, more uncertainty has been cast over Portsmouth Football Club with the debt spiraling more and more out of control, players being shown the door, and staff shortages in the club canteen. Who would want this job?

It's a poisoned chalice, and surely no manager in their right mind would even think about dealing with the circus that has surrounded Pompey's season, which ended with relegation to the Championship.

As for Avram Grant, well, he has won over neutral fans by handling the Portsmouth situation with grace. His attitude has been admirable and his achievement of reaching this year's FA Cup final was one of the finest of this season. With the exception of Chelsea and Southampton fans, everybody wanted the fairy tale ending for Grant's side. It wasn't to be.

Portsmouth fans should be proud and thankful to Avram Grant for what he's done at the club. In times where matters off the pitch were laughable, performances on it were a credit to the club. West Ham would be lucky to have him.
