Marcello Lippi Praises Wayne Rooney

Newly-appointed Italy manager Marcello Lippi has praised Manchester United Wayne Rooney.

"What counts in football, even more than the formation, is the philosophy of the game," the World Cup-winning Lippi said.

"It's the desire of the great players to put themselves at the service of the team when their opponents are in possession of the ball.

"That's what Rooney does at Manchester."

Marcello Lippi was named new Italy coach after the Italian FA did not renew Roberto Donadoni's contract which ran out after the disappointing Euro 2008 campaign.

Lippi won the 2006 World Cup in his previous time with the Azzuri, and his first match in his second reign as Italy's manager will be played on August 20 against Austria.
