Now that we're in the offseason in Portland, the talk is all about offseason moves. Should the Blazers sign a star player to compliment Roy? Should Pritchard pull of a blockbuster trade?
The consensus seems to be that the Trail Blazers need to make a move. There's a strong case that they should, but I think that they don't need to.
First of all, Portland doesn't have the money to sign a superstar player to a big contract. If they worked something out for a player like Chris Bosh they might have to trade one of your favorite Blazers.
If you look at the Blazers current roster, they have all the pieces in place for a championship run.
Greg Oden and Joel Pryzbilla should return healthy for next season, which would give Portland arguably the best front court in the entire NBA when you throw in Marcus Camby, LaMarcus Aldridge and Juwan Howard.
Portland is deep enough with big men that they could take on a team like the Orlando Magic with Dwight Howard and not be too worried about falling into foul trouble.
The popular notion among Blazer fans is to bring Chris Bosh or someone of his caliber. In my opinion, making a move like that would be a waste of money and a risky gamble of ruining team chemistry.
The Blazers don't need to sign anyone to improve, they already have all the pieces in place.
A lot of fans, including me, overreacted after Portland's first round loss to Phoenix.
Now after Phoenix's run through the playoffs with a chance to make the NBA Championship, I look back at Portland's playoff loss with a lot more respect.
Portland gave Phoenix three times the series that the San Antonio Spurs did, and the jury is still out on the Lakers series. The Blazers showed that they could slug it out with one of the NBA's elites which Phoenix has proven themselves to be among.
Plus, you need to consider that Portland was shorthanded going into the series and still forced six games.
If Portland was entirely healthy with Greg Oden, Joel Pryzbilla, and Brandon Roy all playing at 100%, I can't see any way that Portland loses.
They have the veteran players, Andre Miller, Howard, and Camby, the stars, Roy and Aldridge, and the role players, Martell Webster, Nicolas Batum, and Oden, needed to win an NBA Championship.
They Blazers don't need to make a move.
They've got the team and now they just need to put it all together so that Rip City can celebrate an NBA Championship.
