Every year in every sport, one team wins, and all the others lose, which leads to their fans believing they have the most tortured city. I'm here to set the record straight; if you haven't won a championship in five years your city is NOT tortured. The following slides contain the cities in which fans really do suffer. So let the debate of the most tortured sports city begin!
The Maple Leafs haven't won a Stanley Cup since 1967, and even with 13, that's a long time. The fact that they traded away two first rounders and a second rounder for Phil Kessel, who is apparently bad in the locker room, won't make anything better, especially because the Bruins now have the second pick in the draft. The Raptors and Blue Jays are relatively new, but still dissapointing so far.
The SuperSonics recently leaving town has saddened a lot of people in Seattle. The last championship for this town was in 1979, when the Sonics beat the Bullets for their first and only title in Seattle. The Mariners were a great young team with Randy Johnson, Ken Griffey Jr. and A-Rod before losing each of them in seperate years. The Seahawks went to the Super Bowl in 2005 and lost, and since then Mike Holmgren has left. Not the best sports town for fans.
After the Vikings lost four Super Bowls with Fran Tarkenton, one of the most talented teams ever, the 1998 Vikings, lost the NFC Championship Game by a missed field goal from previously perfect Gary Anderson. To put icing on the cake, the Vikings lost last year in the NFC Championship Game off of an interception by Brett Favre. Two World Series in '87 and '91 have helped, but not completely healed Vikings fans.
They only have two sports teams, but the Bills went to the Super Bowl for four straight years and never won it. "At least they got there" isn't gonna comfort any Bills fans and because of the beatdown they got from the Cowboys in SB 25, getting there wasn't enough. Brett Hull's "skate in the crease" goal in the 1999 playoffs that propelled the Stars to the cup doesn't make Buffalo fans feel better.
Are you surprised? You shouldn't be. No championship's since 1964, and if you say NFL championships don't count, then 1948. Red Right 88, The Shot, The Drive, The Fumble, The 1997 World Series with Jose Mesa. This city is the most tortured in all of sports.
