The Top Ten Most Overrated NASCAR Drivers from the last 20 years.
There are overrated athletes in all professional sports, some build their reputation over time others are just plain bust. Here are the to 10 most overrated NASCAR drivers from the last 20 years.
You might call them Bust, or Drives who suck! But at one time all these drivers were the next big thing!
Sit back relax and see if some of the names come to mind when you think about be overrated.
# 10 Kenny Wallace
Ask yourself this if Kenny last name would have been Warren instead of Wallace would he even be on T.V nowadays? Kenny has made a name for himself in the nationwide series and is seen as a top twenty driver. With 9 wins over his career he is anything then overrated. But this is the Sprint cup Series and with no wins and a best point’s finish of 22nd he is very over rated. But hey he has a great personality!
# 9 Rick Wilson
Who you say? Ah yes some of you younger fans might not remember Wilson as the man who was the first driver of the famed #4 car for Morgan-McClure Motorsports (no wins). Or the driver who replaced the King, yes that’s right Richard Petty one of the greatest drivers of all time picked Rick Wilson to be the first drive who would drive for him after he retired. Oh and Richard fired him half way through his first year.
# 8 David Ragan
This one might be too soon to call him overrated; Ragan still might have a long career in the sport. But not only has Jack Roush put a lot of time and money into him, but also has his sponsor UPS. It might be time after the season is over for both Jack and UPS to cut their ties. He might just need a couple years in the nationwide or truck series before he is ready. Oh and UPS if you want a driver there is a driver who needs a sponsor who is leading the points right now.
#7 Reed Sorenson
Oh Chip Ganassi remember when you brought this young buck up thinking he was going to be the next big thing…..Yeah how did that work? Reed is now struggling in the nationwide series. He might now have been as big of a bust as the driver who is next on the list who also drove for Ganassi.
# 6 Casey Mears
Wow Chip I guess you hit lighting twice with overrated bust drivers. Mears is just painful to watch drive not only did he use his famous name to get a ride out of Chip, he also did it with Rick Hendrick! I mean come on why is this guy still getting rides in NASCAR? Oh yeah I remember he won a fluke Coke 600 race in which the next driver on list finished second.
# 5 J.J Yeley
Yes this driver finished second in that same fluke Coke 600 that Mears won. Yeley should also be looked at as the crack that started to ruin the relationship with Tony Stewart and Joe Gibbs Racing. Tony and J.J are good buddies and when Gibbs finally got smart enough to fire this bum Tony got mad and a season later he was gone from JGR. But what it comes down to is why the heck did this guy ever get a ride in the first place???
# 4 Elliot Sadler
Here is another “why the heck does this guy have a ride” I mean come on, Elliot’s best seasons came with Yates racing. How does he pay them back? Once they start to struggle he bolts from them during the season. I guess good things happened to those who wait, and maybe after this year we wont have to see his overrated butt drive around anymore.
# 3 Jimmy Spencer
Mr. Spencer sure has a high opinion of himself, sure the man has been around the sport for over thirty years, but he’s like that old man at wal-mart that sits on the bench trying to start a conversation with anyone that will talk to him. You feel bad so you give him attention, but then you figure something out he’s not very successful (two wins both in 1994 and both at Restrictor plate races), he hates younger more talented drivers then himself (Kurt Busch), and he’s kind of a racist (his famous quote about Toyota coming to NASCAR “Those sons of b!tches bombed Pearl Harbor, don't forget. As long as it's good for the economy, I guess it's okay. But I hope that Ford Chevrolet and Dodge kick their @ss.)
# 2. Dale Earnhardt Jr
Ok I know some of my friends are going to give me crap over only putting him at number two. The man does have 18 wins, I will give him credit but his fans present Earnhardt Jr as very overrated. He seems like a great guy, but because of his fans who have put him on a stage that his father wasn’t even on. And this is why he is number two on this list, but he is still not as overrated or as close to a bust as the number one driver on my list.
# 1 Casey Atwood
Ryan Leaf and JaMarcus Russell don’t have anything on this guy as Bust and overrated goes. Atwood was the driver who Bill Elliott even stated as being the next “Jeff Gordon”. He was marketed as the “2nd coming”, and “the man to lead Dodge back to fame in NASCAR”. Instead he finished 3rd in the Rookie of the year standings (behind Kevin Harvick and Kurt Busch) and 26th in the points during his first year in 2001. He was then fired by Ray Evernham, sent to Jim Smith’s Ultra Motorsports for the 2002 season. After failing there as well he was fired and out of the sprint cup series. Never has a driver come into the sport with such fanfare, and FAIL so badly.
