Can Steelers get a deal done with Woodley

Paul KasprzakContributor IMay 16, 2010

Pittsburgh Steelers outside linebacker Lamar Woodley has at least recorded 11 sacks in each of his last two seasons, which makes him one of the elite pass rushers in the game.

According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, via ProFootballTalk.com, with Woodley being in the last year of his rookie contract and being a second round pick it will be hard for the Steelers to get something done.

The problem lies in the 30 percent rule where a player’s base salary in a contract cannot exceed 30 percent of the previous year.

Now, Woodley’s base salary for 2010 is $550 thousand, which means if the Steelers renegotiate his contract 2011 cannot exceed $715 thousand.

Obviously, elite pass rushers like Minnesota Vikings defensive end Jared Allen and Dallas Cowboys outside linebacker DeMarcus Ware don’t make that kind of a base salary as theirs exceeds four million.

So, how can the Steelers get a contract done?

First, the Steelers are going to have to let Woodley’s contract expire as doing so won’t restrict his base salary then.

Secondly, they would have to either franchise tag him and if that isn’t available pay him what he wants.

In the end, the Steelers are going to have to get creative to get this deal done.
