Sometimes you just wonder want goes through the head of Andy Reid.

Trent Cole called into the local 950 ESPN radio station this afternoon and voiced concern over there being enough room for three stud cornerbacks on the Eagles roster.

Cole's opinion was that it would most likely not work out. There is room for two, but not three. A similar opinion was also voiced by Brian Dawkins earlier in the off-season.

If the other players can see that there is going to be a chemistry issue in the locker room with keeping Lito Sheppard, why can't Andy Reid?

NFL players have huge egos. Such egos are needed to thrive in the NFL. Sheppard is a two-time pro bowler in his prime, do you really think Sheppard's ego can take not being a starter?

Were the trade offers around draft time that poor that Reid is willing to threaten team chemistry in the locker room?

  1. I don't think lockerroom chemistry is the issue here. I don't think there will be any problems between the players and Asante because of all of this. There might be problems on the sidelines, though, if Lito or Sheldon or whoever isn't getting what they see as enough playing time.

Truthfully, Lito's a quiet guy who won't cause a stir. What to look for here, is if Sheldon Brown loses his spot. If the "starters" end up being Asante Samuel and Lito Sheppard, you know for a fact that you can expect to hear from Sheldon Brown about it.

I think we're going to see nickel end up being the base defense this year with more zone and 3-4 looks than usual. Jim Johnson has a lot of personnel to work with here - figure that the Eagles will keep 10 defensive linemen (Trent Cole, Juqua Parker, Victor Abiamiri, Bryan Smith, Darren Howard, Mike Patterson, Brodrick Bunkley, Trevor Laws, Kimo Von Oelhoffen, Montae Reagor) who will all see the field. They have their starters set with Gocong, Bradley, and Gaither, with Akeem Jordan able to play in the event of injury, or in a 3-4 look. They have three starters at corner with a very good dime corner in Joselio Hanson. This could end up cutting into Chris Gocong's playing time more than anyone else.

In general, I think this defense will be one of the top three defenses in the league with San Diego and Minnesota. They just look nasty, and much faster than I can ever remember. Moving Gaither to the WILL position could conceivably result in him picking up 200 tackles (he had 170 at middle last year, and having him on the edge could really utilize his speed well, especially in 3-4 looks). Jim Johnson has a lot to work with this year; this could be a very exotic, intricate defense which should give offensive coordinators headaches all year.
