The Chicago Blackhawks celebrated the start of their first fan convention today, and for the team that has led the league in press conferences over the last year there was no shortage of drama.
At the opening ceremony, the Master of Ceremonies Eddie Olczyk introduced past and present Chicago Blackhawks' players and the broadcasters of the Chicago Blackhawks (TV and Radio).
After the introduction of the former Blackhawks players, John McDonough announces that the Blackhawks would be retiring a number this season—No. 3.
The real twist was that the retiring of No. 3 was to honor two Blackhawks greats, Keith Magnuson and Pierre Pilote.
Keith Magnuson was killed in an auto accident in Vaughan, Ontario with fellow NHL alumnus Rob Ramage behind the wheel. Magnuson played 589 career NHL games, all while donning No. 3 with the Chicago Blackhawks, and scored 14 goals and 125 assists for 139 points.
Pierre Pilote stood 5-foot-9, and his playing weight was 165. Pierre was a three-time recipient of the Norris Trophey for outstanding defenseman in 1963, 1964, and 1965, as well as runner-up in 1962, 1966, and 1967.
Another bit of news out of the Blackhawks' fan convention is that Jonathan Toews will be named as the 34th captain of the Chicago Blackhawks. He will be the third youngest capitan in NHL history.
Toews tallied 54 points for the Blackhawks in the 2007-2008 season and was a runner-up to Patrick Kane in the Calder Trophy Race.
