What a complete and utter joke.
ESPN reported today that Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez has been named the 2007 AL MVP. If this isn't a sign that the world is coming to an end, I don't know what is.
Forget about A-Rod's stats for a second, and focus on a much more important question: where did the Yankees end up this year?
Exiting from the playoffs after the first round, that's where.
So how in the hell can you justify giving their star player the MVP award?
It would be one thing if A-Rod valiantly led a small market team to their first playoff appearance. But that couldn't be further from the truth.
A-Rod plays on the best team money can buy. The Yanks are expected to get to the playoffs every year. With their payroll, anything short of a World Series championship should be considered a complete and utter failure for the franchise.
Since the Yankees didn't win a world championship, there's simply no way A-Rod should get the MVP.
MVP stands for "Most Valuable Player." Not most home runs or RBIs—which aren't too difficult to rack up when you are surrounded by the league's best talent.
The player who means the most to their team is supposed to win this award. Where would the Tigers be without Magglio Ordonez? Could the Indians have had the year they did without the efforts of C.C. Sabathia on the mound? Why can't they be considered, you biased hacks?
All season long, all we ever heard about were the Yankees, the Red Sox, and A-Rod's stellar season. It's time for the real gems of the league to be recognized, and for the overpaid, underperforming superstars to be put in their proper place once and for all.

wow... i'd have to say you're a "complete and utter joke." the MVP is for the regular season. it has nothing to do w/ the post season... hence mike lowell being world series mvp. the yankees would have never made the post season this year if a-rod wasn't holding the team together w/ his bat in the first half. how can you deny the numbers at the end of the season? it ranks up there with some of the best offensive years ever. granted he didn't produce when it counted in the playoffs... but even if the award considered post season play, your examples of other player who deserve some attention are sub par. ordonez?... tigers didn't even make the post season. cc?... he choked against boston when it counted. anyway, i could go on and on, but it really doesn't make a difference.... haters will hate and the yanks and a-rod will continue to give you a reason to do so.

You're a complete retard. The post season has no bearing on the MVP award. Take your head out of your ass, dummy.

Too bad I can't be the dictator of sports awards because I would give the MVP award in any sport to the player that performed both in the regular season and in the playoffs. I think that is the way it should be but that is my own opinion.

Why doesn't he deserve it?He led the league in home runs and RBI's. Nobody came close to him this year, Ordonez maybe but A-Rod was amazing from April until October.

I have to agree with the first post.. You, Gordon Georgi are the "complete and utter joke." You are a sports writer/contributor and you don't even know the facts of what you are writing about. You also contradict yourself when you say this idiotic rhetorical question, "Were would the Tigers be without Magglio Ordonez?" implying Magglio is more deserving than A-rod, as your entire justification is based on the Yankees lackluster performance in the playoffs. Did Detroit come close to even making the playoffs?
Don't write about baseball if you know nothing about it. A-Rod had one of the best seasons any player could have and without him the Yankees wouldn't have won the Wildcard. How many game-winning hits did he have?
Seriously, Bleacherreport, delete this article, it's embarrassing for your credibility and reputation.

I agree. You should delete this article to avoid public humiliation. You don't even understand what A-rod did for the Yankees. All season long he was there and always consistent. He alway got a hit when it most counter and carried the team on his back when they were 13 1/2 games behind Boston. He is the reason the Yankees made the playoffs and I think he deserves this awardmore than anyone else.

The MVP is voted on before the playoffs begin moron! Its a regular season award. AROD led the MAJORS, not just the AL, in homers, rbi and runs for a playoff team. 3 other guys have done that in history. Mantle, Gehrig and Ruth. Ordonez had Granderson, Guillen and Sheffield hitting in front of him which is much better than Damon, Jeter and Abreu. Get a clue.

Surprisingly, Jeter and Abreu both got MVP votes. I personally think his personality and defense make him a clear clut choice for MVP. For that, I'd go with Sabathia or Beckett. Yes, they were incredibly valuable, and I think a pitcher can win an MVP. Sabathia defeated great pitchers, and his team could be confident with him on the mound. As for position players, Granderson and A-Rod both had amazing seasons. Who else was close?

I meant A-Rod was not a clear cut choice for MVP

I have to say, although I hate the Yankees, and recognize AROD for the loser jerk he is, the "complete and utter joke" is that AROD was not a unanimous choice for the AL MVP this year. The two morons who gave their first place votes to Magglio clearly did so because of some personal issues they have with AROD. Now, while I can understand thinking little of AROD and wanting to take it out on him in some way, he still was the AL MVP without question. What the voters--and apparently the original poster--fail to realize is that the best player in the league will inherently be the most valuable to his team. Who else would be more valuable than the player who most contributed to his team winning? And who contributes more to his team winning than the player who most frequently leads to his team scoring runs and helps them keep the other team off the scoreboard? AROD may not be Brooks Robinson at third base, but he certainly does not hurt his team defensively, and the amount of runs he contributes to makes it absolutely clear that he was more valuable to the Yankees than any other player was to his team in 2007.

I have read a lot of bad articles on the Bleacher Report. This is without a doubt the worst. Please never write about baseball again.

Do you realize how stupid you sound when you write this? The MVP Award is VOTED for after the last game of the regular season. PLUS the Yankees ENDED UP in the playoffs BECAUSE of Arod. Your ignorance as a baseball writer and for bleacherreport allowing this garbage to be posted is pathetic.
Even Boston fans would agree Arod deserves the MVP. Those 2 detroit writers who voted for Magglio should be banned from voting ever again, as their bias for their hometown guy clearly played a factor, as well as their dislike for Arod and the Yankees. You fall in the same category as those idiots.

Dear Gordon,
Please stop writing about baseball. I hate you.

Bleacher Report. You need to get rid of this article. You need to get rid of it now. The writer obviously did not realize that the MVP voting was based on the regular season. Save yourselves any further embarassment.

Dear Gordon,
Call your internet service provider and cancel your service. Call your power company and have them shut off your power. Unplug your computer. Throw the monitor out the window. Donate your CPU to the nearest elementary school, and while you are there write "I will never think about baseball again" 1000 times on the chalkboard. When you get home take your keyboard to the garage and cut it in half with a chainsaw, then smash the two peices with a sledgehammer. Then go to the local chatholic church and apologize to God for making such a mistake. You suck. I hate you.
