Hello fine readers of bleacherreport.com!
On Thursday July 17th, the Philadelphia Phillies acquired 27 year old Right Hander Joe Blanton for 3 minor-league prospects. In the deal the Phillies receive much needed help in their starting rotation and a young arm for the future.
In his brief career with the Athletics, Blanton posted a respectable 47-46 W/L record. He also has won 12 or more games every season since 2005. Blanton strikes out twice as many batters as he walks, and was 1st in the American League in games started last year.
Blanton can give up a lot of hits (241 in 2007 in which he lead the AL and 240 in 2006) which is what has lead to his 4.25 career ERA, but he gives the Phillies another strong arm for the second half.
With Brett Myers coming back against the Mets the Phillies are preparing to make a run at their second NL East title for the first time since 1980-1981.
I welcome Joe Blanton.
