Luis Aragonés, who retired as coach of the Spanish national team after Euro 2008, has apologized to fans after failing to meet everyone's expectations of another letdown.

"I really don't know what to say. It's disappointing to say the least." Aragonés said during a phone interview.

"You have a team known for one thing and one thing only, but in the biggest tournament of the year you can't even do that. It's heartbreaking. After the final whistle against Germany I was beside myself. Sure, winning is nice, but that's not how Spain plays football. That's not even Portugal."

Spain, a popular pick to choke in the quarter finals once again, instead beat the Italian dive team on penalty kicks on their way to making it through the entire tournament without the customary choke job, leaving fans everywhere stunned.
