South Carolina FB: The Best of Times, the Worst of Times

IconEverybody knows the famous quote from A Tale of Two Cities:

"It was the best of times, it was the worst of times..."

That pretty well summarizes South Carolina's topsy-turvy season.

The Gamecocks started the year 6-1—but most of the wins came against inferior opponents.

Georgia was missing some of its best players against USC. Kentucky turned out to be an overrated team—despite the Wildcats' win over LSU.

To be a great team, you have finish like a great team. Take LSU, for example.

The Tigers have trailed in several recent games, but went on to win each of them. The Gamecocks, on the other hand, have a knack for leaving the job undone: We lost to Vanderbilt (Vanderbilt?), Tennessee, Arkansas, and Florida.

The team is weak on offense and special teams, which is why we performed poorly in the last four games. Hopefully those failures season will serve as lessons for next year.

As is stands, the Gamecocks need to finish 2007 by beating Clemson, who has a great defense and a marvelous quarterback. We defeated Clemson in their house last year—now they'll be hungry for revenge.

After a disappointing campaign, the Cocks can at least salvage a little pride by coming together, making smart decisions, and beating the Tigers.
