MMA Fans: Please Pray for Boxer Oscar Diaz and His Family
The 1,200 boxing fans present at the San Antonio, Texas Municipal Auditorium, as well as those watching the Wednesday Night's Fights on ESPN 2 last night were shocked as Oscar Diaz collapsed during the rest period between rounds 10 and 11 last night.
Delvin Rodriguez was proclaimed the winner, but the 28-year-old was very concerned about Diaz who was carried out of the ring on a stretcher with oxygen being administered and taken to the University Hospital.
At 1:00 AM today Diaz underwent a three hour surgery with the expectation being that he was suffering from a brain bleed. Although it was reported that no bleeding was found, a good sign, his brain was swollen and his body temperature was decreased to reduce the swelling.
After the surgery he was admitted to the intensive care unit and is considered to remain in critical condition.
His family has requested that no further information on his condition be released, although it has been reported that he has not yet regained consciousness after the surgery.
What damage his brain incurred will not be determined until he has regained consciousness.
As most boxing and MMA fans are aware, repetitive hard blows to the head are much more dangerous than the typical injuries which occur in MMA matches, and account for the high number of boxing fatalities.
Please keep Oscar Diaz and his family in your prayers while we await word on his condition.
Just one more thought, I read a comment from an angry boxing fan that even though ESPN 2 telecast this fight, they did not give updates to Oscar Diaz's condition. They did, however, continue to update the Brett Favre "situation" throughout the night. A sad commentary on sports!
