2010 Kentucky Derby: Favorites and Odds From Chruchhill Downs
On May 1st, the quest for the next Triple Crown winner begins at the 136th Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs in Louisville, KY.
It is well known that the last Triple Crown winner was Affirmed in 1978.
The 32-year drought is the longest in Triple Crown history.
The second longest drought was 25 years long, between 1948, when Citation accomplished the feat, and 1973, when it was broken by Secretariat.
This year’s favorite, Eskendereya, was scratched from the race due to swelling in his right front leg. The injury to Eskendereya now makes Lookin At Lucky the Derby favorite.
Lookin At Lucky was not very lucky today when the draw for the post position was held. Although he was installed as the 3-1 favorite, he drew the No. 1 post in a full field of 20 horses.
The No. 1 post is considered a huge disadvantage in a full field, since Lookin At Lucky will have to fight through traffic. That could open up things for second choice Sidney’s Candy, who is a 5-1 favorite.
There is one filly in this race, Devil May Care, who will try to follow the trail blazed by Rachel Alexander last year. Devil May Care is a 10-1 favorite along with Florida Derby winner Ice Box and Gotham winner Awesome Act.
Anyone hoping to find another long shot like last year’s winner Mine That Bird can try their luck at one of four horses who are 50-1 shots like the Derby winner in 2009.
Three of those four horses are Dean’s Kitten, Backtalk, and Homeboykris. Make Music For Me is the last of the 50-1 shots and was the last horse to get into the field after the injury to Eskendereya.
The weather forecast for the next couple of days calls for heavy rains beginning late on Friday night. Rain continues to dominate the Kentucky weather with a 60 percent chance of rain on Saturday.
Even with the threat of bad weather a crowd in excess of 100,000 is expected. Below is the whole 20-horse field with post, jockeys, and odds.
