The Oakland Raiders once again defy logic and waste another first round pick by ignoring other glaring needs. The Raiders need OT, G, DT, MBL, & CB (pretty much in that order of importance). Lets see what they actually did verses what they should have done and what their possibilities are for redemption in Rounds 2 & 3 today.
Tom Cable confirmed what I thought, in a post First Round Draft Interview on www.raiders.com. They wanted OT's, Russel Okung or Trent Williams, but unfortunately the Washington Redskins and Seattle Seahawks beat them to the punch. Therefore they obviously decided to do 3 things :(1) not trade back and get better value, (2) miss out on the other 2 - 3 quality O-Linemen Markice Pouncy (C/G), Mike Iupati (G), and Bryan Bulaga (OT) & (3) Pick up a Middle Linebacker that they could have gotten better value for in Round 2.
So according to Tom Cable, the Raiders are "GEEKED" about picking McClain at #8. My problem with this pick (other than than the obvious that I previously stated), is that Rolando will experience similar if not the same failure as Kirk Morrison in the defending against the run, unless we use the our 2nd or 3rd round pick to either draft a DT or trade for a veteran DT (like maybe Albert Haynesworth). I would rather have picked up a down hill playing MLB who plays with a attitude like Brandon Spikes who could be picked in either the second or maybe even the third round. Personally I think we made a mistake in trading a draft pick for Kamerion Wimbley when we could have kept the pick and moved Kirk Morrison to Strong Side Line Backer.
We wiffed on the O-Line in the First Round so we have to redeem ourselves today. Personally, I don't think that any of the best available O-Linemen are good enough to come in and be a starter / impact player, especially not for left offensive tackle. They would be good for depth though. I have heard that we are interested in the Ravens Offensive Tackle, Jarred Gaither, who was chosen in 2007. Maybe a trade is on the horizon.
I am much more optimistic about the remaining defensive tackle prospects than than available offensive linemen. If I had my choice, I would use the 2nd Round Pick on Terrance Cody who although struggles as a pass rusher is a much more productive run stopper, which would be a good compliment to his former teammate, Rolando McClain. Brian Price who was projected as a Top 5 DT, isn't a typical Al Davis Pick due to his lack of height and weight but the guy is a good football player and good pass rusher.
Things with the Raiders are always unpredictable. They never do what most people think they should do to make the team better. So far, I'm not convinced that they have changed in this regard. Hopefully, they can make some good moves today to shore up the trenches on both sides of the ball, LIKE TOM CABLE SAID THEY WOULD. At this point Raider Nation, we can only hope. Stayed tuned for Day 2 of the NFL draft at 5:30 CST, 6:30 EST.
