A Negative Prognosis on Bumgarner

Not by the doctors, at least, but by Rob Neyer in this post on espn.com.  Unfortunately, I agree with Neyer — there does seem to be something wrong with Madison Bumgarner.

The speed on Bumgarner’s fastball significantly diminished as 2009 progressed, and he’s been just horrible this Spring Training and through two starts at AAA.  He is reportedly throwing his fast ball eight to ten miles per hour slower than he did this time last year.  That just can’t be good.

The doctors apparently can’t find anything wrong with him, but if he can’t regain his fastball but quick, the Giants might do best shutting him down for while, as the drop in speed is often a sign of a major arm injury coming on.
