Just yesterday I wrote an article on five overlooked free agents still on the market. Kevin Jones was near the top of that list and less than 24 hours later he was signed. As much as I would love to take credit for it, I doubt Lovie Smith was looking over my shoulder yesterday.
So how does Jones fit in Chicago?
He will come in and compete with current starter and rookie Matt Forte for touches. Jones brings a bit of experience and a lot of punch to one of the worst rushing offenses in the NFL. He will more than likely platoon with Forte throughout the season, once he becomes healthy.
The Bear's offensive line won't be helping Jones stay healthy, but the expectations are low and he won't be the premier back in Chicago like he was in Detroit. Those two things could be what finally keeps him healthy for a full season.
I personally think that Cleveland or Arizona would have been better fits for Jones. He needs to take his time and fully recover if he wants to perform up to his potential. To do that he needs to be put in a back up role this year until he is 100 percent again. He rushed back to the field last year and it resulted in him getting hurt again before the end of the season. Backing up Jamal Lewis in Cleveland with a stellar offensive line would have been perfect fit.
All in all, Chicago is Jones's new home and he does upgrade their running attack immediately. At the very least Chicago fans can look forward to the two games a year against Detroit where Jones will run for 200 yards and two or three touchdowns.
