2010 SMCAA TOURNAMENT – NORTHEAST REGION – SECOND ROUND
#3 Texas A&M 72, #30 California-Riverside 59
Texas A&M got 23 points from Donald Sloan and built up an 11 point halftime lead on the way to a 72-59 victory over California-Riverside in a SMCAA Northeast 2nd round affair. Sloan scored his 23 points on 9 for 17 shooting. David Loubeau (12 points), Bryan Davis (11 points), and B.J. Holmes (10 points, 4 assists off the bench) were also in double figures for the Aggies, who got away with shooting only 56% from the free throw line on the night (10-18).
The Highlanders got 15 points from Larry Gurgainous and 11 points off the bench from Rudy Meo, but UCR could not overcome 37% shooting as a team and only 29% from three point range.
#14 Nebraska 77, #19 Buffalo 74
Nebraska held off a furious Buffalo rally to hang on and defeat the Bulls 77-74 in a 2nd round Northeast game. The Cornhuskers led by eleven, 67-56, 3:39 left before UB was able to cut the deficit to two on a 3 pointer by Calvin Betts (10 points, 8 rebounds) with five seconds left. Christian Standhardinger (11 points off the bench) hit one of two free throws to give Buffalo a last second chance, but John Boyer’s (15 points, 5 assists) three point attempt at the buzzer came up short. Brandon Richardson (13 points) and Lance Jeter (12 points) joined Standhardinger in double figures for Nebraska.
Joining Boyer and Betts in double figures for the Bulls were Rodney Pierce, who led UB with 18 points in the loss.
NORTHEAST REGION 3RD ROUND: #14 Nebraska vs. #3 Texas A&M
#22 Denver 61, #11 Wright State 55
Denver used a key 7-0 run over a three minute stretch in the second half and go on to defeat Wright State 61-55 in a Northeast 2nd round contest. In what was a tight game through the first half and early part of the second, the Pioneers made their run with the score at 39-38 with ten minutes remaining. Nate Rohnert led the way for DU with 15 points and 9 rebounds on the evening. Brian Stafford added 14 points in the win.
The Raiders had three players in double figures, led by Todd Brown and N’Gai Evans, who 11 points apiece. Vaughn Duggins chipped in 10 points, but it was not enough as WSU hit just 3 of 15 three pointers in the game.
#6 Nevada-Las Vegas 84, #27 Portland State 56
UNLV had five players in double figures as they were in control of the ballgame the entire way and went on to blowout Portland State 84-56 in a 2nd round Northeast matchup. Tre’Von Willis (16 points), Oscar Bellfield (12), Kendall Wallace (12), Chace Stanback (10), and Matt Shaw (10) all contributed in the win for the Rebels, who shot 49% from the field and hit 25 of their 32 free throw attempts on the night.
Jamie Jones was the only Viking in double figures with 15 points as PSU struggled all night long, making only 35% of the shots, including hitting only 3 three pointers on 16 attempts in the loss.
