Football fans in Italy are in mourning after Sampdoria and Treviso midfielder Gionata Mingozzi was tragically killed in a car crash early this morning.

Mingozzi who was 23-years-old and co-owned by Samp and Treviso, was on his way to a pre-season medical when he was involved in a head-on crash around 8am between his car and a lorry near the town of Venice.

“It is with the deepest sorrow that we will mourn with his family, friends and all who have had the privilege of knowing him during his tragically short life,” a statement on Treviso’s club website reads.

Mingozzi spent the 2006/07 season on loan at Lecce, before Treviso bought 50 per cent of his contract last summer, he began his career with Ravenna in 2001 before joining Perugia in 2004.

A year later he was bought by Sampdoria, where he went on to make his Serie A debut.
