2010 SMCAA TOURNAMENT – SOUTH REGION – SECOND ROUND
#3 Maryland 78, #35 Sacred Heart 64
Greivis Vasquez scored 20 points and also had 6 steals as Maryland defeated a feisty Sacred Heart team 78-64 in a SMCAA South 2nd round game. Vasquez shot 8 of 14 from the field, including three 3 pointers in the contest. Vazquez had help from Landon Milbourne (16 points), Eric Hayes (10 points, 9 assists), and Sean Mosley (10 points) in the win.
Sacred Heart was led by Chauncey Hardy and his 12 points. Corey Hassan (11 points), Ryan Litke (11 points off the bench), Jerrell Thompson (10 points) also were in double figures for the Pioneers. SHU struggled at the free throw line, however, hitting 13-22 (59% on the night.
#14 Creighton 81, #19 Jacksonville 72
Creighton opened the second half with a 13-4 run to take control of the game and went on to defeat Jacksonville 81-72 in a 2nd round South contest. With the game tied at 43-43 at the break, the Blue Jays used the first 7 minutes of the second half to build a 56-47 lead. Justin Carter had a superb game for Creighton, scoring 22 points on 10 of 13 shooting on the night. Kenny Lawson Jr. added 14 point and 8 rebounds in the victory.
The Dolphins were led by Lehmon Colbert and his 15 points and 13 rebounds. Ben Smith added 14 points and Travis Cohn chipped in 12 for JU, who ended up only shooting 42% as a team on the night.
SOUTH REGION 3RD ROUND: #14 Creighton vs. #3 Maryland
#11 Iowa State 76, #22 Southern Methodist 61
Iowa State got 21 points from Craig Brackins and had a comfortable 76-61 win over Southern Methodist in a South 2nd round game. Brackins was joined in double figures by Marquis Gilstrap, who 18 points and 14 rebounds on the night. The Cyclones shot an even 50% on the night in the victory.
The Mustangs were led by Mouhammad Faye with his 16 points and 7 rebounds. Papa Dia added 12 points and 10 rebounds in the loss. SMU struggled shooting the ball all night, hitting on only 34% (22-64) of their shots for the game.
#6 Mississippi 83, #27 South Dakota 46
Mississippi got a stellar performance from Chris Warren in dominating South Dakota, 83-46, in a 2nd round South blowout. Warren scored 28 points on 8 of 19 shooting, including six 3 pointers. He also was 6 of 7 from the foul line. Terrico White (13 points) and Zach Graham (13 points) were also in double figures for the Rebels.
The Coyotes had a bad night shooting, hitting only 30% (16-54) from the field on the night. Tyler Cain and Kendall Cutler each had 10 points to lead the South Dakota. Cain also had 8 rebounds in the loss.
