2010 SMCAA TOURNAMENT – EAST REGION – SECOND ROUND
#1 West Virginia 71, #33 Samford 40
West Virginia got 22 points from Da’Sean Butler as they crushed Samford 71-40 in a SMCAA East region 2nd round game. Butler, who also had 8 rebounds in the game, did his damage from the field, shooting 9 of 16 including 2 three pointers. Kevin Jones and Wellington Smith each added 12 points for WVU, who 56% from the field and out rebounded Samford by 18 in the contest.
Bryan Friday and his 10 points were the only Bulldog in double figures, as Samford was held to 37% shooting from the field and were only able to hit 4 of 21 three pointers on the night.
#17 North Texas 79, #16 Stanford 73
North Texas had 4 players in double figures and used superb foul shooting to defeat Stanford 79-73 in a 2nd round East contest. Tristian Thompson (17 points), Josh White (14 points), Eric Tramiel (14 points), and George Odufuwa (10 points, 14 rebounds) led the Mean Green, who shot 22 for 26 (85%) from the free throw line.
The Cardinal, who could manage only 67% from the line (14-21), was led by Landry Fields and his 20 points and 11 rebounds. Jeremy Green added 17 points and Andrew Zimmerman chipped in 10 points for Stanford in the loss. The Cardinal also only shot 3 for 15 from three point range.
EAST REGION 3RD ROUND: #17 North Texas vs. #1 West Virginia
#9 St. John’s 80, #24 Texas-San Antonio 74 (OVERTIME)
Paris Horne had 9 of his team leading 22 points in overtime as St. John’s rallied from a 13 point second half deficit and defeat Texas-San Antonio 80-74 in overtime in an East 2nd round thriller. The Red Storm, who trailed 45-32 with 14 minutes left, rallied behind Horne, D.J. Kennedy (18 points), and Sean Evans (12 points) to force overtime and took control right from the opening tap of the extra session.
The Roadrunners, who were leading 32-28 at the break, were led by Omar Johnson and his 14 points and 5 assists. Terry Fields (13 points, 10 rebounds), Morris Smith IV (11 points, 7 rebounds), and Demarco Scepter (10 points) were also in double figures for UTSA.
#8 Virginia Commonwealth 83, #25 Radford 66
Virginia Commonwealth broke open a tight game in the second half and cruised to a 83-66 victory over Radford in a 2nd round East game. Brandon Rozzell (18 points), Jamie Skeen (17 points), and T.J. Gwynn (11 points off the bench) led the way for the Rams, who shot 48% from the field on the night.
Artsiom Parakhouski had his second double double in a row with 17 points and 13 rebounds for the Highlanders. Lazar Trifunovic and Joey Lynch-Flohr each added 10 points for RU. They struggled from the three point line, however hitting just 4 of 13 from beyond the arc.
