Which Rookies on NXT Deserve a WWE Contract?
Like most of you, I feel that WWE has turned what could be a great idea for a show, NXT, into a joke. WWE had the idea of having eight rookies vie for a WWE contract on a reality based program, sounds good right?
Well, WWE has proven yet again that they don't completely understand their audience as they have turned the once branded ECW into a circus act.
With that said, some of the rookies on NXT have actually made an impact in the minds and hearts of WWE fans, while others have failed to live up to their potential.
Bryan Danielson, who was given the totally unique name of Daniel Bryan, has been on a losing streak that has left him at a 0-8 record on NXT. WWE clearly has some master plan for the 10-year veteran of the indy scene, but I have no idea what it could be.
When Bryan faced Jericho on NXT's first show, I had high hopes for how they would portray the American Dragon, but he seems to be flailing and looking for a niche in the WWE universe.
Overall, I am impressed with his ring work, but not his mic skills or his charisma. These are two very important traits in a WWE superstar.
Wade Barrett has impressed me. After last nights talking contest, which was a god awful 20 minutes, I actually like the Englishman now. He showed that he has good promo skills and can get an audience to like him.
Barrett has dominated most of NXT's rookies. He's looked good against the pros and I think that given the right opponent, he could turn out a great match.
Of all the rookies, based solely on last nights contest, Wade deserves a contract more than anybody.
Heath Slater has been dubbed the one man rock band, but that moniker is not exactly appropriate as he has slowly become on of the most boring personalities on NXT.
He shows potential in the ring, but his look and mic skills need a change if he is to become a superstar.
Michael Tarver is someone I have yet to see anything in. Granted, the WWE has decided to not use him as much as most of the rookies, but his character was somewhat interesting in the beginning. But now he is just a sad boxer.
Can anyone say, Next Marc Mero?
The corn fed meat head Skip Sheffield is one of those guys who might be good in a tag team, or even a stable as backup, but I never see him involved in a main event. The whole hillbilly gimmick only ever goes so far.
If he had Hillbilly Jim in his corner, he might have a chance, but with Regal as his mentor, I don't see him making it past NXT.
Justin Gabriel is one of those wrestlers who has all the skills needed to be great, but just isn't there yet. His high-flying finishing move always gets a good crowd response, but he will have to be more than a one trick pony to get anywhere.
David Otunga has become from the biggest name on NXT. He's the only NXT rookie to face a champion on another brand.
When Otunga won the battle royal to guest host Raw, I knew he would end up in a match, but two weeks in a row?
I think WWE is prepping him for something big, unfortunately, I don't agree that Otunga is ready for the main stage. He is still a little stale on the mic and he has shown very little originality in the ring.
I hope he progresses because he has the look and style to fit right in with the WWE roster.
At first glance, Darren Young is someone that you wanted to hate for almost no reason. His cocky attitude certainly didn't win him any popularity contests.
His match against Gallows showed that he does have the ring skills necessary to get things done, but his promo skills are still very weak. For a guy who looks as crazy as he does, he still seems nervous when speaking to an audience.
The fact that he stood up to Punk, won the match and then had his hand raised by Punk shows that WWE wants him to be successful.
I think he needs to work a lot on his dialogue, otherwise he will end up like Drew Mcintyre his first time around, appearing and then disappearing.
So in short, Barrett seems to be the front runner right now, but that could change at any time.
Who do you see as the most deserving of a WWE contract?
