The Week in Sports: April 4-April 10, 2010

A quick review and take on the week that was…April 4-10, 2010.

Eagles pull a "no-no" and trade All-Pro McNabb to division rival for a bag of Doritos and a Pepsi-Cola. Great move trading a NFL All-Pro to a division rival.

Speaking of food, as a reward for this brilliant move, the Eagles thanked Andy Reid via a three-year extension…Okay, so maybe it has something to with a .617 winning percentage and six division championships over the past 11 years.

MLB kicked off another season as da “Sox” beat dem damn Yankees. Sabathia wanted everyone to know that the camera adds 15 pounds…So he's just really, really fat, not really, really, really fat.

The rich get richer, the Red Sox signed Josh Beckett to a four-year, $68 million contract. Wonder what a MLB pitcher is worth these days? This contract was signed the day after he gave up five runs on eight hits in 4 2/3 innings to the Yankees on Opening Day.

Pujols belts two bangers on Opening Day. Sad to say, but how long before HGH or steroid rumors come out on this guy?

Speaking of HGH, Tiger denies using an illegal drug ever in his life, including HGH or steroids. Tiger was seen walking away from the podium laughing, saying “I didn’t say anything about drugs that no one knows about though.”

Ginobili has definitely earned his contract renewal these past couple of weeks as he has carried the Spurs…After passing his “manhood check” (aka a “cough, cough” physical), Manu received a three-year, $38.9 million extension.

Is San Antonio the best No. 8 team in the history of the NBA? Before the recent two-game losing streak, San Antonio had W’s versus Cleveland, Boston, Houston and Orlando…all without Tony Parker…Is it too late for the Lakers to get the No. 2 spot?

On that note, the Lakers are the least intimidating number No. 1 I have seen in quite some time. They are playing at a phenomenal .500 rate over their last 10 games, and it seems as though injuries will continue to plague them through the post season.

The No. 2 through No. 8 spots in the West are separated by four games…Every team is above .600 winning percentage…not a good time to be ailing Lakers!

Dream Team elected to Basketball Hall of fame…It is about damn time NBA legend—and don’t forget a one-time All-Star—Christian Laettner gets his due credit...Seriously,  about damn time Chris Mullin gets some love.

Butler loses, Duke wins. It is a shame there had to be a loser...How many jobs do you think coach Brad Stevens will be tied to during the offseason?

NCAA announced it is seriously exploring the possibility to expand its wallet…err, I mean, to expand the NCAA tournament. Awesome…now we will have that many more 30- to 50-point blowouts to watch in the opening round—this year excluded of course!

Given the exposure the story of the New Jersey fan wearing a bag and being yelled at by the team’s CEO has received as of late, it is amazing to me that Clipper fans do not wear bags annually this time of year…Maybe it’s time we do!

UConn wins 78 in a row. (Oh yeah, and a ring two years in a row). Despite the awe of the feat and however long it progresses, I am not sure it will ever compare to UCLA’s record…Yup, I said it and meant it. Women’s b-ball does not compare to men’s…less talent and less competition.

Steve Spurrier announced he's going to call all of the Gamecocks' offensive plays. “I called most all of them last year, but I'm going to call them all this year” said Spurrier…hmmm…Is that a good idea, coach? SC’s offense ranked 105th last year. I guess he’s shooting for the 110 spot.

Crazy that Woods can be away from the game as long as he was, go through what he has gone through, and go eight-under through the first three rounds at the Masters…he’s what we call a “functional” addict.

The Masters ratings were up 50 percent over last year, as everyone was watching Tiger's return…Soooo, where is the incentive for sports and its leaders to deter negative activity from its star players?...I guess the old adage rings true here: All press is good press.

Seattle Mariners pitcher Cliff Lee is expected to miss the first month of the season because of his strained abdominal muscle…Man, this team cannot catch a break even when it decides to spend some coin.

No charges will be charged against Big Ben after an investigation into accusations of sexual assault. This being Ben’s second accusation, maybe it's time to settle down and stop playing with fire….Ever heard of three times a charge…err, I mean, a charm?

A little love to the A-T-L? The Hawks win 50 games for the first time in 12 years. It is about time that their fans actually turn up to the games….no bags required.

Jimmy Clausen tried to show the NFL he is worth a first-round pick during his pro day. Clausen didn't run, overthrew a couple long routes, and his receivers needed to make some adjustments on several other throws. Better luck next time, Clausen…On a positive note, his hair was still super spiky upon removal of his helmet.

NY Rangers are battling and playing well to keep their playoff hopes alive…As for the rest of the league, only a few teams (Washington, Chicago, Ottawa, Detroit, and San Jose) are playing well and are looking ripe for a Lord Stanley run.

What do you know? It's opening week, and San Francisco is undefeated!!! Oh wait…three of those wins came against Houston, who will be battling it out with Pittsburgh this year for the cellar spot in the NL Central once again…but a W is a W right?

Anderson Silva yawned his way into the Octagon, and lost the favor of the crowd during his title defense against Demian Maia…Does his voice remind anyone else of Mike Tyson’s?

Holy Moly….this sucks! The Clippers and Holyfield win on the same day…It’s official, hell must have frozen over.

On a serious note…Sadly, Notre Dame recruit, Matt James, died recently after falling from a motel balcony in Panama City, Fla. This is very tragic, and my condolences to his family and friends. This article is dedicated to him.
