Celestino Caballero: Monday Meet and Greet

Tyler CurtisApr 11, 2010

Celestino Caballero absolutely destroyed Daud Yordan this weekend to win the IBF interim featherweight title. I wasn’t sold on Yordan but it was an impressive win.

He clearly sent a message to the rest of the featherweight division. He threw great combinations, looked fast, and never stopped throwing. He is getting older at 33 but he didn’t show his age at all.

His body punches were straight from hell. You hit someone in the body like that, I don’t care who they are, it will deter them.

I was most impressed by his reflexes and how he tucked his shoulder. He appears to get hit a lot but he tucks his shoulder well and takes a lot of shots on the shoulder.

Caballero is a relatively unknown guy even though he has fought on American TV and is ranked in the top 10 pound-for-pound. I recently wrote an article about him and I really believe he has superstar potential.

Fight I Want to See: Caballero against Juan Manuel Lopez or Yuriorkis Gamboa would be good scraps. Either fight would be interesting.

Lopez and Gamboa are excellent fighters but have never fought anyone who was 5’11”. How they deal with the height would make or break them.

I think Caballero could win both fights but he needs to work on his defense. Yordan hit him easily. He does have a good chin but if Lopez or Gamboa tag you easy, you will go down.

What is in his future: It appears at 33-years-old, he wants Lopez or Gamboa now. He has called out Lopez out many times. He isn’t getting any younger and at this weight that is costly.

He wants to fight either one and I am hoping he gets his chance soon.
