Do you believe the Kansas City Chiefs will be a bad team this season?
I sure do.
The Kansas City Chiefs have traded away many of ther good players in the last couple years. Those players include Trent Green two seasons ago and Jared Allen this off-season. Adding to that, Willie Roaf retired, Eddie Kennison was released and Priest Holmes retired.
Basically, head coach Herm Edwards and general manager Carl Peterson are looking for a youth movement.
The Chiefs went 9-7 two seasons ago and loss to the Colts in the wild card game.
The Chiefs had many draft picks in this year's NFL Draft.
There draft look like this: Round 1, Glenn Dorsey, DT, LSU | Round 1, Branden Albert, G, Virginia | Round 2, Brandon Flowers, CB, Virginia Tech | Round 3, Jamaal Charles, RB, Texas | Round 3, Brad Cottam, TE, Tennessee | Round 3, DaJuan Morgan, S, North Carolina State | Round 4, William Franklin, WR, Missouri | Round 5, Brandon Carr, CB, Grand Valley State | Round 6, Barry Richardson, T, Clemson | Round 6, Kevin Robinson, WR, Utah State | Round 7, Brian Johnston, DE, Gardner-Webb | Round 7, Mike Merritt, TE, UCF
They have many young players on this years team and that is why I believe they will struggle.
Projected Lineup:
QB: Brodie Croyle will start because it is time for a change in Kansas City. In Brodie's career, he has played in 11 games, throwing 6 TD's and 8 INT's. If he is ineffective, look for veteran Damon Huard to step in.
RB: This position looks to be set with Larry Johnson. Despite only scoring three rushing TD's last season, he will be healthy and return to his form. Between 2005 and 2006 Larry scored 37 TD's on the ground. Last season's 5th round pick Kolby Smith will be used as a backup along with rookie Jamaal Charles from Texas.
FB: They lost Boomer Grigsby to free agency, but rookie Mike Cox should start here. If he can't do the job, unknown Oliver Hoyte will.
WR: This position has not bee solid in Kansas City since Otis Taylor back in the 1980's. They will have LSU star Dwayne Bowe starting, as well as free agent signee Devard Darling from Baltimore. Behind those two guys, they have very little to step in and play. They have Jeff Webb (1 career TD), William Franklin (4th round pick), Kevin Robinson (6th round pick) and Bobby Sippio (star with Arena Football, but has yet to catch a pass in the NFL). Look for this position to be a big struggle for the Chiefs.
TE: Obviously Pro Bowler Tony Gonzalez will start here and they brought in a solid backup through the draft, Brad Cottam.
OL: They have Brandon Albert (1st round pick) at LT, Brain Waters (a solid LG, has 102 career starts), center Rudy Niswanger (has 1 career start), RG Adrian Jones (16 career starts, and moved to G from the T position), and RT Damion McIntosh (signed six year deal with Chiefs in march of '07 and he has had 95 career starts). Here is another spot where the Chiefs will struggle.
DE: Tamba Hali, a former 1st round pick has 15.5 sacks and 121 tackles in his two year career. Also, former Chicago Bear Alfonso Boone will move from DT to DE this year. Look for Turk McBride and Trevor Johnson to be the backups.
DT: 1st round pick Glenn Dorsey will start alongside Ron Edwards and the backups will be second year pro's Tank Tyler and T.J. Jackson. Glenn Dorsey will look to be rookie of the year.
LB: This position looks to be the Chief's biggest strength. They will have Derrick Johnson, Napolean Harris and 13 year pro Donnie Edwards starting. Between them they have 288 career starts. They brought in five year pro Demorrio Williams who has started 43 games and Pat Thomas who will backup Derrick Johnson.
CB: Brandon Flowers (2nd round pick) will start along with 11 year pro Patrick Surtain (who has 36 career interceptions and 129 career starts). They will also have rising cornerback Tyron Brackenridge and Dimitri Patterson as some depth. If one of these starters goes down with an injury, they will struggle at this position. They might put in 5th round pick Brandon Carr from Grand Valley State.
FS: Jarrad Page (third year pro, who has six career interceptions) is a lock at this position. Greg Wesley wanted to be traded, but he will have to settle for a backup job.
SS: Bernard Pollard (third year pro, who has two career interceptions) should be worried about third round pick DaJuan Morgan.
Special Teams: Conner Barth (rookie from North Carolina) is okay as the kicker, Dustin Colquitt will be solid at punter and B.J. Sams will try to be the next Dante Hall.
Projected Record: 3-13, the only games I see them winning this season are against the Dolphins, Raiders, and Falcons. They will struggle at many positions because of their youth, but Larry Johnson, Tony Gonzalez, Glenn Dorsey, Dwayne Bowe and the linebackers on the Chiefs will be fun to watch.
I'm sorry all you Kansas City Chief fans out there, but this season will be a long one.
Arrowhead Stadium will not sell out as much as it used to, because people will see how bad the team really is.
