According to Andrew Gross of the Bergin Record, Rangers captain Chris Drury has been nominated for The Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy which is awarded to the player who, “best exemplifies dedication, perseverance, and sportsmanship to hockey.”

The award has been given out starting in 1968 and since then the Rangers have had four winners, Jean Ratelle in 1971, Rod Gilbert in 1976, Anders Hedberg in 1985, and Adam Graves in 2001.

Thoughts: To me, Drury might not be the offensive force the team has expected him to, but it’s hard to argue his dedication, perseverance, and sportsmanship. Drury dealt with a head injury earlier in the season, but because the Rangers were struggling at the time he made his way back on the ice probably faster than he should have.

He’s the captain of this team not because he’s the most gifted offensive player, but because of the other qualities he displays.Other than maybe Ryan Callahan , who I suspect will be a nominee for this award down the road, I can’t think of a Ranger more deserving of the Masterton trophy.

Whether or not he wins this trophy, we’ll have to wait and see. I think he’s deserved it, how about you?
