The Worldwide Leader is strictly adhering to the “two gimmicky, long-running, meaningless stories per summer rule.” First we were treated with the “Face of the Program” piece (who won that anyway?), and now Title Town, USA.

To your potential surprise, Columbus is one of 20 finalists for “SportsCenter’s interactive search for America’s top championship city.” To ratchet the excitement factor up to 11, a crew from ESPN will be in town on Thursday, July 17, to shoot pieces promoting Columbus’ bid to be named “TitleTown USA.”

According to the press release, Archie Griffith will be interviewed during a pep rally for Columbus outside of the Horseshoe. For approximately two hours starting at 10:30 a.m., ESPN will be on hand, and fans are encouraged to show up to influence the public who will ultimately decide the winner with their votes on ESPN.com. Team gear and signs are encouraged. And by signs, I assume they mean signs like

this, this, this, or any of these signs.

The Columbus segment will air Monday, July 21, in the 6 p.m. ET edition of SportsCenter. Also on that day, ESPN Classic will highlight Columbus with an airing of the 2003 Fiesta Bowl between Ohio State and Miami at 2 p.m., and an airing of SportsCentury: Jack Nicklaus at 5 p.m.

Upon completion of the daily series featuring all 20 cities, online polling will re-open Thursday, July 24 – Saturday, July 26.  The winner will be announced Sunday, July 27.

There is no word on where they are going or who is making an appearance in the segments. But we can suggest one thing. If they want Greg Oden to appear, have plenty of tacos and beer.
