Nelson Figueroa, who was designated for assignment by the Mets when Sean Green beat him out for the final bullpen spot, has been claimed off waiver by the Philadelphia Phillies. Figueroa, 35, was mulling going to Japan for a bigger payday rather than join the Mets in the minors had he gone unclaimed off waivers. He recalled clearing waivers six other times in his career. Figgy had a strong spring training camp for the Mets, despite one poor outing at the end of camp and leading to a 4.61 Grapefruit League ERA. Figueroa, a Brooklyn native wanted to play at home. He was a up and down player for the Mets. He a class act and gave his best to stay here. The Mets were looking at the youth coming up.
