If you’re an avid New York/New Jersey sports fan, then last night was a huge night for you as well as, an exhausting one.
Especially, if you were constantly flipping channels for four hours, like myself.
Boston fans were especially sad last night considering baseball and basketball, and the waterworks in Atlanta and Stanford were not far behind.
Most of these teams (with the exception of the Rangers,) did win on the road.
What does this say about New York, New Jersey and Connecticut teams?
Do these athletes handle the pressures better when they’re not playing in their respective home fields/stadiums?
Or is this just an April fool’s fluke come one week late?
Regardless of where these games were played, I’m proud of these teams and am even more proud to say that I’m from New York.
Here’s a look at the various games that dominated most televisions and sports bars as of 7 p.m. EST, last night, in the tri-state area.
I’ve also included my personal opinion on which athlete should have been the MVP for each event.
New York Yankees: 6 Vs. Boston Red Sox: 4
Baseball’s biggest rivalry competed in game two of the series last night at Fenway Park.
After a huge upset on Easter Sunday, the Bronx Bombers came back to claim victory.
Starting pitchers, AJ Burnett and Jon Lester were dismissed early so Alfredo Aceves received the win and Mariano Rivera, the save.
All other members of the bullpen that pitched had outstanding games (Robertson, Marte, Chamberlain,) but I must say, the MVP of the night goes to, Robinson Cano.
The second baseman had a solo home run, two RBIs, and two runs.
New Jersey Devils: 3 Vs. Atlanta Thrashers: 0
With only a few games left in the hockey season, all the teams need to give it their all, if they want to see any playoff action.
The Devils especially wanted this win and they sure proved themselves worthy of the post season.
Last night we saw goals from Dean McAmmond, Zach Parise, and Travis Zajac.
The MVP of the night, goes to none other than, Martin Brodeur.
The veteran goalie allowed no pucks in his net last night and with that, grabbed his 600th career win, a feat achieved by no other goaltender in NHL history.
We’re proud of you Marty!
New York Knicks: 104 Vs. Boston Celtics: 101
Well, well, well, look what we have here.
Having several players on their injured list (McGrady, Harrington, and Chandler,) the Knicks had no choice but to look elsewhere on the bench for their scoring.
The Celtics sure put up a good fight, this game was neck-and-neck all throughout, but New York dominated in the end.
And the MVP of the evening goes to, Danilo Gallinari, who scored a career-high 31 points including the go-ahead basket with 36 seconds left in the game.
Honorable mention: Earl Barron with 17 points and 18 rebounds, a career best.
New York Rangers: 2 Vs. Buffalo Sabres: 5
Ha!Not much to say here considering I’m not a fan of either team.
Tickets for the playoffs are available on Buffalo’s site.
Better luck tonight Rangers!
That being said, MVP of the evening goes to, Henrik Lundqvist.
The starting Rangers goalie was pulled in the second period since he allowed three goals in only 16 shots.
Tsk tsk!
UConn Huskies: 53 Vs. Stanford Cardinal: 47
After the ladies of Stanford put up a grueling first half, holding the Huskies down 12 points,(the lowest ever in a championship game and in school history) UConn came back to win their 78th consecutive game.
For the second consecutive season in Women’s basketball, the UConn Huskies have won the NCAA championship, for the seventh time.
Good job ladies!
And the MVP goes to…
Maya Moore—Scored 23 points and 11 rebounds! Moore scored 11 of the Huskies’ first 17 points in the second half.
