Mike Holmgren and His Cleveland Browns Seem to Be Following a LOST Script So Far

Daniel WolfApr 7, 2010

Some of you may like the show LOST, some of you may not, but if there is one consistent that everyone should know about the show is that it can be very confusing to follow and hard to understand.

I was watching last night's episode and thought to myself, Cleveland Browns President Mike Holmgren must be a fan of the show too, because the teams' offseason thus far has also been very confusing, hard to understand at times and there seem to be sideways stories intertwined with what the ending goal may be.

So what has been confusing?

Almost everything, when it comes to figuring out what the heck the Browns are going to do in the 2010 NFL Draft. It doesn't matter what round you may be trying to predict, because they have all been confusing since at certain points the Browns claimed to need a cornerback, but then went and made a trade with the Eagles to get a cornerback in Sheldon Brown.

Now the Browns have just visited with both Florida cornerback Joe Haden (once again) and Rutgers cornerback Devin McCourty, who projects to be a late first round or early second round selection.

Does this mean the Browns are looking to trade down in the first round with their interest in McCourty?

Who knows.

That is all part of the confusion process, but even more mind-boggling has been the quarterback position. First Brady Quinn and Derek Anderson, now Jake Delhomme and Seneca Wallace, and a mystery quarterback who will be named sometime during the draft.

The Browns have met with and talked about quarterbacks, including Sam Bradford, Colt McCoy and Tim Tebow, but there are a few other young prospects who have yet to be mentioned, and one of them could be the actual target.

All these other quarterback names could even be used to throw off the rest of the NFL, or maybe Holmgren thinks that if he talks about the quarterback he really likes, then maybe NFL teams will think he likes another name he hasn't mentioned yet.

Getting confused yet?

That's why the Browns' offseason has been very "LOST -like."

Trying to understand what the Browns have done this offseason is relatively easier when Holmgren meets with the press and discusses moves that have been made.

Like why the Browns signed right tackle Tony Pashos—because they needed a quality starter in that position.

Or why the Browns signed tight end Benjamin Watson—because current starter Robert Royal cannot catch anything and promising backup Evan Moore isn't ready yet.

Or why the Browns traded for Wallace—to be their new starter, no wait...to be their backup. Okay, maybe it has been hard to understand at times, but nothing is even close to being done when it comes to changes and moves.

The Browns have some kind of master plan that they are following like a television show script and every single move has been calculated and quite possibly executed to perfection so far this year.

Even once the draft passes there are no guarantees that the Browns will stop making moves, and Holmgren could have a rough outline complete for his post-draft script leading up to the fourth preseason.

In the end, the Browns will clean up all the loose ends and possible story lines as LOST is sure to do (hopefully).

One thing is for sure if you're a Browns fan, this has been the craziest offseason since the return of the team in 1999, and five years down the road when his contract expires, Holmgren may have a future in writing scripts for shows that are confusing and are hard to understand, but then make themselves clear in the end.
